Kevin Langeree Claims Red Bull King Of The Air Title For Second Time

Cape Town (South Africa) – Dutchman Kevin Langeree out-classed Spanish young gun Liam Whaley and Lewis Crathern (UK) to win his second Red Bull King of the Air title at Kite Beach in Blouberg.

“Today everything just came together and it’s like a dream come true,” the 2009 World Freestyle Champ and 2014 Red Bull King of the Air winner commented after the final. Langeree, who missed out on the 2017 event due to an injury, is only the second rider ever to have won two King of the Air titles. “To win it again is just a magical feeling,” he said.

Rounds One and Two of the competition were completed in good conditions on Saturday 27 January – the first day of the weather window period. Wednesday 31 January offered the world’s best big-air kiteboarders the opportunity to push the limits of their sport when the ‘Cape Doctor’ Southeasterly wind, coupled with a good Southwesterly groundswell, lined up the conditions for the final rounds of action to take place.

Langeree, after a hiccup in Round One saw him working hard to advance through all the rounds on both days, peaked in the final against Crathern and Whaley. Whaley was called up as a late replacement for the injured 2017 defending champion Nick Jacobsen.

A 6,000-strong crowd lined Kite Beach – the new venue this year – and watched as the riders pushed each other from Round Three all the way to the Final.

“The move to Kite Beach was the best thing ever,” Langeree said, “It gave us as riders the opportunity to show our moves and it was definitely a day I won’t easily forget,” he said.

“Conditions were good,” said Sportive Director, Sergio Cantagalli of the finals day. “The wind, combined with the good swell gave the riders the chance to perform and that was our main goal.”

“We saw some new names and this is very important to us,” he added. “We also saw some high scores and new moves and there was a lot of energy.”

“This event is unique in that it is in continued evolution with the input of the riders and the judges it is always our aim at improving it. It is like a World Tour in one event,” he concluded.

Aaron Hadlow took the competition’s Mystic ‘Move of the Day’ award with his Megaloop inverted board-off front roll.

The playing field was honestly pretty even this year, in terms of rider skill. It felt to me as if the conditions played a bit more into what a rider could show. Ruben faltered a wee bit, but and some of the sets did not quite line up for him. However, both Ruben and Kevin got knocked out in their very first heats and ended up in a head-to-head elimination round. So in a sense, Ruben lost directly to the winner.

To bad about Rubs falling out, the conditions werent really massive enought to make him shine. However KOTA is all about adapting and showing variety. Ruben being on of the few riders who didnt adapt to straps this year to showcase the much-needed variety. The progress of this event during the last years has been amazing till the point megaloop with a single roll doesnt cut it anymore. I hope Ruben is looking for new tricks for the future. (Maybe continue developing the s-loop from circa 2010).
Happy winds!

Line length plays a big part when its not rocking 40 knots.

In those conditions the guys with 24m lines were clearly getting better height and it payed off for them. I'm surprised that not many of the competitors are used to/opt for longer lines when it blowing in the 30's.

Jessie was one of the most sensational riders to watch, but he just couldn't get the height required. Tough to come up with scoring criteria that rewards both height on the outside while also fostering that impressive stuff on the inside. You need both.

Maybe Kevin made it look good but I'd be tempted to try out a Naish Pivot after watching that...

Yeah it was pretty telling when Langeree came in for a post round interview super stoked about landing tricks he had never landed before. Shows what kind of adaptation were required to up their game this year. I'm still super stoked Langeree won on the Pivot!!!!

ok well I understand why Kevin took that pivot out instead of the torch but my goodness it is scary as f--- watching that pivot try to climb back up after a kite loop. That pivot just does not catch you as well as a torch does, some scary megaloops on that thing. I guess it's worth the 2 or 3 extra meters in height.

Could be a new thing, bringing the bridled kites to the next King of the Air for that extra 2 or 3 meters of height.
