Sand / water / aqua socks to wear inside boots

Postby bmcfiv » Tue Feb 13, 2018 4:52 pm

Looking for advice on the thinnest pair of water / sand socks that will fit inside a Ronix one boot, and offer some foot protection. I don't want them, but only a matter of time until I have to navigate ragged rocks and barnacles after a technical failure or twisted kite. I do have a little pouch I aqua-sealed onto my impact vest, so if they are small enough, I could also roll them up and stick them in there.

Priorities are

  • Super thin
  • Some foot protection
  • Form fitting so they won't ball up when riding

Below are ones I've found so far, but nothing stands out. Anyone else solve this problem?

You seem like the perfect candidate for the Hyperlite System. You wear boots all the time and then strap into your bindings just l ike snowboard bindings. I don't think you can get enough protection given how thin the sock has to be for the boot to fit properly.

Here's a minimalist shoe option that's packable...

Technical Toe-Socks or the Vibram Signa shoes could also work...

ZemGear's Oxygen2 or their older Ninja could possibly work...

Both the Vibram and Zem shoes can also be easily rolled up and packed away as well.

2mm is the thinnest i've ever found which I can get away with in my regular size bindings (ronix tighter than LF iv found) but they don't last more than 4/5 sessions before the heel becomes obliterated. Also, as mentioned by EDT they are not gonna protect your feet a great deal but its definitely better than bare feet, I do it more on the basis of temp rather than protection. I order a batch of bout 10pairs a time from china for a £20 or so. Also, if you walk round on the beach with em before/after you're session they wont last 5mins... I use skanky old trainers on the beach. If I think i'm likely to be trekking over anything really rough I go systems.

None of those shoes will work. Any kind of five finger toe shoes or neoprene booties that might fit into straps are far too thick and won't fit in boots. Your boots have to be tight enough that your foot doesn't move around in it. Like Slim I will use 2mm (1.5mm is better) neoprene socks when it gets below 38f (1c) for thermal protection, but you can't walk around in them. There are those dyneema socks by the "barefoot company" https://www.getfyf.com/ but I've never seen someone demo them yet. I suppose you could give those a try but honestly the Hyperlite System is perfect for you.

The shoes I posted are for the alternative option of packing them, not for wearing with the boots.

To the original poster - Truly the sock option is not the best since most will get destroyed and they could also affect the fit and performance of the boots.
I agree with the others here that the Hyperlite binding would be the most ideal set-up if not wanting to carry or wear anything.

Another option is to carry a minimalist sandal like this...

I need my eyes checked. I thought, this guys taking the kitesurfing addiction just a little too far, because I read the title as "Sand/water/aqua socks to wear in bed"...

Slingshot Shredtowns are a better option than Hyperlite system for keeping your feet cushy.
