Me: 75 kg / 165 lbs, on a 5.2 Tomo Vanguard. 100% strapless.

Other than Peter, I love the Planing Hulls :-)
(But we both like the same kind of kites ;) )

Just wondering what most people use as their primary surfboard size/volume.

I'm 6'0", 175 lbs, and I ride a pretty small 5'3" Cabrinha Spade. I like a smaller board when it comes to kiting. Harder to get upwind, but fun to slash around.
One board can't do it all
Winds can be light...medium or strong
I got 3 of them and generally match them to the kite size i use...wind direction...water conditions etc
Most use is 5'2" x 21" x 2 3/8" Quad.....w/17 or 12 sqm....waves anywhere from 2 ft to 4ft
Then a 5'5" x 18 1/4" x 2" Quad ....w/12 or 10 sqm....waves 3-6ft
And finally a gun shape 5"9" x 16 3/4" x 1 3/4" Tri (narrow and thin / real low volume)...w/10 or 8 or 6 sqm....waves 4-8ft

I weigh/height about same...straps adjusted quite loose...works for me

165 lbs 5’8”
FireWire Tomo Vader 4’10” for everything
70% strapless, 30% loose straps,
for me, best board ever from mush to double overhead, kite drifting to fully powered smacks
5m-9m, occasionally when waves are really good 11m
Sorry, one of those short, square boards, 😆

5' 10" and 185 lbs. I ride a 5'1" jester for flat water, and small surf, also a 5'4" Tomo Vanguard for bigger waves. I really wish I'd have bought a 5'2" or smaller Vanguard, or better yet a Vader. 5'4" Vanguard is not as loose as I'd like it to be. 100% strapless.

adamj2281, I assume the idea of this poll was to see which sizes and boards different riders use, right ?

When not seeing the outline of the boards, it is almost useless.

Some of them are from manufacturers - but then we all have to look them up to know which type of board they are :-?
Agree, I am lazy, but would be a lot easier that only ONE, the poster, shows a pic of his board(s) - instead of having each reader to google ALL posts, to see what the boards are...
And some are not production boards, thus not possible.

Pictures says A LOT more than 1000 words, especially here :naughty:
A pic and a few words, says it all in fact !

I know I might sound like, or be, a grumpy old man now - but I am also interested in seeing what other riders use, sizewise, no matter if square or classic or fish or whatever boards :thumb:

It would be easy for each poster to edit their post, and put up a picture of their board, or link to a picture of their production board.
Besides, EVERYBODY got pictures of their own board, thats for sure, just a suggestion to make this thread a lot better :D

This is true, when I said volume, I figured everyone would put full details, including shape (tomo, etc.).

I was just curious because I debated what shape/size to get coming off the OR Jester/Duke lineup. I settled on a 5'3" Spade and struggled getting upwind with it, but I believe that's more a function of having to deal with chop a bit more than on the Mako lines. It's give and take, I lose the chop-eating, carving style of the OR boards, but gain a tighter, quicker slash off the wave. It allows a more direct route when bottom turning and downlooping back towards the face than the Jester/Duke, which in turn allows me to carry more speed and produce a harder slash.

5'-3 Liquid Force KiteFish(es) Quad Mod pretty much exclusively now. This board is shorter, with less rocker, less snappy (due to "V" in tail and extra weight) than I would prefer. But I broke all of my "real" kite surfboards a long time ago. That forced me to bring this board out of the "backup board" pile and learn to use it. Since I have never broken one, nor have I broken a fin (or box), there is no reason to go back to riding on egg shells.

Here is the fin layout I did on my KiteFishes:

Not a fan of fish tails !
My fave is diamond tail Quad 5'2" x 21" TT construction North Nugget...i always use straps and jump the heck out of it..holds up really good...fantastic board w/17 & 12 sqm
Vol 28.9 L ...i'm 77kg
Did not like the upright back fins that came with board...front ones 4 1/2" are good...so in the back i put 4" with similar swept angle as front.. much better in waves...feels better overall
