wind range and kite size for heavy weight

Postby abel » Sun Feb 25, 2018 7:43 am

I was asked to recommend a kite (type and size) to a guy that weights 100kg.
I would appreciate recommendations for kite size, type (C, Bow, Delta,...) and practical wind range from members that have similar weight.

Thanks

I am 97kg use mostly 10m cabrinha switchlade in 9 to 14ms wind. I got also 8m that i used just few times, same for 13m kite. Not much joy in less then 9ms wind.

I am 108kg and use fast TT's they really make me feel like a lighter person and is wery important for big/heavy guys.
Ozone Edge 19 from 10-24 knots 32m lines
Core Xr3 15. from 13-28 knots 27m lines
Core Xr3 12. from 18-36 knots 27m lines
Core Xr3 9. from 30+++
This is the usable windrange, but I prefer to use all of them in the upper end of the windrange.
Longer lines is also a lot better if you are heavy.

Peter's graph is a little old now, but for most freeride kites with a TT, it's still close.

http://www.kiteforum.com/viewtopic.php? ... ph#p687994

As a heavy rider, I prefer something with some pull (without too much bar pressure). I find lighter feeling kites, that need to be flown fast around the window, don't suit me.
Most brands freeride kites will cover most styles of riding unless your friend wants to kite waves or get into freestyle.
Cabrinha Switchblade for 12m and under. For over 12m, maybe a Contra or the Ozone Edge. (The Core XR5's are getting rave reviews and worth a look).
Kites much over 12m can start to feel slow, but at 100Kg, he may well need one, depending on local weather, so demo these if you can.

Hi,

I'm 100KG. I use these kites mainly on twintips.

Pansh Aurora 2 22M 6 to 15 Knots (Hydrofoil or Spleene Door)
Best Roca 17M 8 to 20
Core GTS3 15M 10 to 20
Best Roca 12M 15 to 25
Best Roca 9M 20 to 35
Best Kahoona 7.5M 25 to 40
Best Waroo 5M 30 to 50

I prefer freeride kites like the Roca because the wind is insanly gusty at home. A kite with a great low-end power and huge depower is essential especially when you are heavy. I have had other kites like C-Hybrid and Delta etc.. but I keep coming back freeride kites that's what works for me.

36 knots on a 12m? Holy :mosh:

Not saying you are wrong, but I would never use my 12 in 36 knots.

Right now I´m slightly less than 100kg, but I´m usually between 100-110kg.

I use my 17m from 12-13 (depending on the water) up to around 20 knots. Could probably go lower than 12 in flat water, but just too boring for me. Going above 20 knots and one better not lose the board - body dragging up wind just won´t happen. My 12m is quite similar to Guttorm. Could probably go slightly lower from 15-16 up to 25-30. Prefer it around 20.

Always on twin tip.

My Kite sizes:
116Kg - Late spring/summer/early Fall winds, (winter winds may reduce the speeds slightly);

2016 Cabrinha Velocity 16m 14 to 19mph 2016 Crazyfly LW 160 X 44
2016 Cabrinha Velocity 14m 17 to 23mph 2016 Crazyfly Cruiser 145 X 48
2016 Cabrinha S/B 12m 20 to 25mph 2014 Crazyfly Elite 140 X 42
2015 Ozone Edge 11m 22 to 27mph 2016 X Caliber 132 X 40
2017 Cabrinha S/B 10m 24 to 30mph 2016 X Caliber 132 X 40

At the beach, I go to the water’s edge I take a wind speed reading with my Xplorer windmeter, held at arm’s length above my head.
Depending on the wind range I’m seeing I then rig a kite from the above table.
Note, you have to consider any local variations, tide and forecast, such as a visible wind line, say 50m out, due to a slight wind shadow, where the wind can be seen to be a lot stronger beyond, so you need to use plenty of common sense with this.

I do sometimes combine this method with asking any riders that have been out, how it was and looking to see what size others are using, if anyone is around, mainly to see if it’s windier further out at sea or not.
(Many times, at my spot it feels windier where we rig and launch than on the water).

The table is not the full range of the kite at my weight, just a starting point to rig, but 40mph on a 12m sounds interesting!

The best conditions for my favorite kite the Xr3 12 is 28-35 knots, gusts over 36 knots is survival kiting.
Yes I like a lot of power.
