The problem is that’s the only way to have something to show...how can you trust someone telling I can Kite and then f**** it all up...those people are out there.

Better to show a level 3 than not being able to Kite at all.

If you can Kite it is easy to get a level 3 card. Costs a bit, do it once, problem solved.

PS: not a fan of regulations too, but better than having no access.
This path of requiring certification to do something in public is in general a bad idea. But EVEN if one agrees with it, why make it EXCLUSIVE to one FOR PROFIT organization? I vigorously disagree. I am strongly against the proposed ban in Miami but urge everyone to consider this IKO exclusivity before signing.
This subject came up 4 years ago ; i said about the same thing as "slowboat"
that it was a REALLY BAD idea, to let a for profit origination take control
over kite boarding. I suggested that the Kite community, world wide, make it's
own club, with a regulation system, that was flexible enough to adjust the
rules according to local needs, (( and it was non profit )) for the kiters and
by the kiters.

If IKO gets a foot-hold to the point they can control the kiting community
then you can expect the club dues to go up dramatically in the future.

Kiters NEED to get off their ASS'es ; and start their own world-wide
or country wide club
that has the power to deal with issues like what's going on now, in this Thread.
Individual local clubs ,simply don't have the power to deal with government alone ;
Ya got to band together.

I will NOT join IKO, (rather fly my HG instead) ; and you really should read some
of these posts and Threads by kiwimike+iko, before you give IKO your money

http://www.kiteforum.com/search.php?key ... wimike+iko

@ Kitemanmuc

In the short term ; how about you make your own club, and have your
own club instructors, charge visitors to join , before they are legally
allowed to kite on the beaches that you and your mates worked so hard
to keep open ? If they can't kite ; then they can leave or get arrested.

That is EXACTLY what would happen if you went to Torry pines in San Diego,
and tried to fly with no membership to the local club, and without proof of
insurance.

Once again --- LETTING, ( IKO ) control your outcome ; it's a Really BAD idea !! :nono:
I will be Glad to sign ; once Ya got some other alternative , other than IKO.

Can you PM me some info on how the city regulates this in SD. Here the police come and laugh, then start talking to girls in bikinis.
Also, when we say "or equivalent", the local foundation will be able to test you as well as we have several appropriately certified instructors as a part of the organization. They are just requesting a particular standard. It also boils down to a fundamental lack of understanding of the sport and certifications of the sport by the residents who are coming out with the pitch forks and torches. It is give and take and this is not a hard give considering the alternative

I am happy you guys fight for it !
Big thanks!

It could also be residence only with a club membership...and we tourists would just be watching...
So we should be happy the guys keeping the beach open for us too.
And this makes getting an IKO card 3 like the least problem.

The city requires it. Well, then that’s the way it is.
Driving to another beach costs us more than walking to 24th street and get a level 3 card.

And complaining is easy, actually doing is a huge step.

You don’t like IKO, please go ahead and bring us an alternative!!!
Something we all are looking for and our sport could really need !
But remember, it should be non profit, so you work for free 24/7/365...

Again, thx Miami guys from all of us who understand what you are doing for our sport!

Keep fighting!

I am sure they will find a way that other licenses can be accepted. Would be good for sure!

Signed, didn't have IKO till my last trip down there as I usually would ride further north where it isn't required. Put off getting it for three years taking trips down there and just riding other beaches. I got it last time at Miami Kiteboarding to ride Crandon, was quick and easy to get and that's a fun flat water spot. With the number of kiteboarders down there, I'm surprised the city doesn't just come up with established rules like Pompano / Crandon have, and have an officer sitting there writing expensive tickets to anyone that blatantly disobeys and ignores them. Not sure I really see the need for IKO.

How much did you pay to get the IKO card at Crandon?

Guess I won't be able to kite when I'm in Miami in May according to that rationale.

Self taught, never took a lesson, I'll be damned if I'm going to pay to prove I can kite proficiently.

This, at least to some extent, is still the land of the free. f*** that!

Read above, the user got his license in Miami.
You can Kite? Show it to a school and they will give you a card. Then you can Kite in Miami.
