Has anyone tried them side by side? I love to kite fast so maybe the Xr4 is more fun despite beeing an older model, what is the pros and cons of them?

I tried 12m Xr4 and 5 in one session about a month ago... I'd say they are pretty much the same kite..
XR5 seemed a bit snappier, but that was probably due to it being new vs my old Xr4 with 60+ sessions on it..
Can't say anything bad about both kites.. the Core bar is a different story

Very interesting to read.
I'd assumed for all the fuss that the XR5 was a revolution in kite performance!

I know it is not what you asked but if you like fast kites the Xr is not for you, i found it slow but reliable.

I've had both but never flew back to back. When I first went out on the xr5 12 it did feel different, a bit quicker on bar input but not twitchy fast just smooth smooth. The angle upwind is effortless and seems like the kite is always ahead of you more than the xr4 but still pulls steady and drifts along without input other than sheeting. Relaunch is childs play and jumps floaty and and will go as high as you have the skills to co-ordinate. The low end and high end is as good as it gets in one kite.I find I am out on the 12 happy and then the wind comes up and everyone else is scrambling where I am just getting more stoked. No flapping noises depowered either! But f you have a good xr4 it may not be worth the upgrade unless you can get good $$ for it.
