Naish Repair Hack

Postby seaplus » Wed Mar 28, 2018 6:01 pm

Naish makes great kites...always has. Yet there are some pros & cons to the octopus system.
All the cons with the system arise IF you have do any repairs to bladders or valves.
Again, Naish makes a quality product so you'll most likely not have any bladder or valve issues unless you damage your kite.

To cut to the chase...I just want to pass on a "hack" for separating the octopus connections to each strut.
It can be quite hard to separate the male & female valves with your fingers...not much wiggle room and a very tight valve connections.

So, I bought off Amazon a pair of Hose Separator Pliers for under $10 US.

Obviously use these with care.

Thanks for the tip.

I still think that we should just boycott the buggers until they start using a normal inflate system. After missing out on kites sales for a few seasons - they will surely realize a thing or two.

Totally agree.
Why do they carry on with this system?

Lots of people like the naish system. Especially people that buy a Naish use it for 2 years then resell it. They never have problems with the octopus.

I wonder if Naish have not been able to obtain a licensing agreement from Slingshot, who own the patent for 1-pump.

I think you should boycott Naish, you already want nothing to do with EPIC.

I own and have owned Naish kites....and yes this thing is patetic ! I will never buy it again (peoples that say that it a nice system have probably never had a leak or a problem on a bladder or strut !)

OP looks like a nice solution. Good post.
Granted I have not had much problems with the Octopus, but it doesn't take much more time to fix than any other system. I like it because it works, it is clean and you do not have hoses rotting / popping off. I much prefer a one-pump system over a multi-pump system.
Also Naish did have kites with multi pump systems and if they had sold, they would probably put out more of them. I just think people prefers a one-pump system.

Name me a brand that will not leak.
hoses, multi-ports, or octopus...repairing leaks suck no matter what system you have
My OP just makes taking apart the octopus system easier

I've been riding Naish for 3yrs now and have only had 1 slow leak recently happen...and I'll take the blame for vacuum packing it for travel.
Another brand I used to ride had valves delaminating within the 1st year (no vacuum packing to blame with them).

There will be no boycott from me...with or without octopi.

I help at a shop where we repair kites. We find that Naish is one of the better quality kite brands and well made.

The octopus system has been easy to access for years now (although is was a pain before that). We rarely see a failure of the octopus strut connections. It is certainly more durable than systems with exposed hoses and nipples.. which we more often have to repair.

Keep in mind also that the Naish system inherently will keep your struts inflated in the event of a loss of leading edge air pressure. Many riders of other kites don’t bother pinching off each strut so they could end up with no inflation in their kite in this situation.
