Grand Cayman next week

Postby b-kite » Mon Apr 09, 2018 11:27 pm

Going to Grand Cayman next week with the fam. How’s the wind? Is it worth it to take my gear? Any suggestions if there is no wind? Things to do, places to go, where to eat? Thanks in advance.

Ok, that sucks. Probably not worth taking my gear then.

Cayman Island is amazing!!! It is my favorite place to visit and kiteboard. With is crystal clear water that is shallow, butter smooth from the reef protection and you can see sting rays and turtles under you as you kite.

The water is beautiful, the wind is solid, and the island is just fantastic.

If there is no wind, plenty to do:
Sting ray city and the crystal caves I highly recommend.
Snorkeling with turtles at Spotts Beach
Visit the turtle farm and play with turtles
Amazing Diving
The blow holes on east end are fun on a large swell
Biolumenance tour either kayak or paddle board is a must (if tours are running depending on the moon)

For kiting Caymans I was there just 6 weeks ago for 16 days. Winds of 25mph nearly every day, 2 days of 16-19mph winds. and 2 days no wind from a big thunder storm that rolled thru.

You have Barkers Beach on the West end of the Island about 15 min from Georgetown. It is the popular spot, has a school there. Has a couple openings in the reef to get out into the ocean and out of the bay. Because Caymans is surrounded by a reef, the water is really flat and smooth.

My FAVORITE SPOT hands down is Colliers Beach on East End. Is near White Sands Diving and Kite School. Colliers is a great beach with a bathroom, outdoor shower covered seating in the shade. The wind is side onshore, mostly onshore, you can kite for miles in each direction even over to a ship wreck sticking out of the sand.

I have been to Caymans several times and will many more in the future. I am still working on talking my wife into moving there for a few years. Its a work in progress.......

For food, The Lighthouse is the most recommended restuarant on the island and for a good reason.
Vivines kitchen
Rankins Jerk
Macabuca for Monday Night all you can eat bbq
Calypso Grill
Di Kit-Chin Jerk is amazing local food! Everything is good. Ask for the pork or beef sausage, its not on the menu but is to die for!!
My Bar - great drinks, awesome views, the Conch Fritters with the jerk mayo is very yummy.

Agree with kochease 110%.
Barker's is fun, but East End is solitary and pristine to go cruise around. Just be warned about Collier's, if you go south of it and need to come into shore it is very rocky/nasty. So just be cautious for lightwind missions. (booties)

I would add Kurt's Corner on the food recommendations. It's a hole in the wall with outdoor seating only, but it is really amazing fresh seafood that is very reasonable price.

Grand Cayman is an awesome place to vacation, dive and kite!

Have you looked at the forecasts? Looks like fun to me. I'd definitely bring a couple of kites. You won't want to miss out on it. Let us know how the trip goes.

Have fun!
