My new project: iGetwind.com

Postby laf1greg » Tue Apr 24, 2018 6:37 pm

Hi my name is Grégoire Lafortune, I'm a wind enthousiast and software developer from Montreal Canada.

Since 2016 I'm working on a new project : iGetwind.com. It's a wind/waves/tides forecast web application for kitesurfers and windsurfers worldwide. North America gets models HRRR, NAM, GFS, HDPRS and europe gets ICON-EU and GFS. Plus waves/tides and GFS forecasts for the entire world.

I invite you to try it and send me feedback :

https://igetwind.com

Thanks

Grégoire

Hi,

looks sleek!
I usually use the following because it allows multicomparison.
https://www.meteoblue.com/en/weather/fo ... ca_4153188

It would be nice to expose the location in the url so that it works with bookmark without sign in

Thanks a lot for your feedback.
I usually use the following because it allows multicomparison.
My first goal was to be able to compare multiple spot, so you can decide where to go based on forecast for different location. To compare forecast side by side for one spot is also a good idea. It will probably come in a futre release.
It would be nice to expose the location in the url so that it works with bookmark without sign in
It does :)
click on "Share" tab and you will see a direct link to your spot. But it's better to register and save your spot as the system will pre-fetch the forecast and it will be faster to load next time you come.

Thanks

Thanks, yes share worked.
For site by site comparison it would be convenient the scroll to move all sides together (so that I can compare by checking the vertical line)

By the way, very nice user interface! :thumb:

That's very nice, thanks! Great to have the tides showing and the multiple sites in one window is great, especially when choosing whether to stay in Cape Town or head east.

what makes this different from windguru/windfinder/ikitesurf? Looks like the same forecast models displayed in the same format

USP is that you can see a couple of spots at the same page.
Not sure if the others do it, I think not.

That's quite handy if you have a few spots around that you could visit.
(Although this to have high user value, it needs a high density grid in order to show the differences of the spots being within short driving distance.)

Thanks for your question. I created igetwind.com because I felt current forecast websites were slow to consult for kitesurfers and windsurfers who are actively looking for wind regularly. I wanted as much information as possible at one place.

The web interface on igetwind let you open different spots and save them (up to 10) so it makes it very easy to choose between spots. Also there is tide data on the graph for those who kitesurf on ocean. There is also wave forecasts.

If you look closely you will notice that I show data hourly, wich is more precise forecasts for those who have less time to kite (on workday).

Users can also add spots so a database of kitesurfing spot worlwide will evolve and local community can interact on a chatbox and share local knowledge. The other weather sites usualy show forecast spot wich have nothing to do with where people practice the sports.

I did'nt try to reinvent the wheel but to create a better tool so people can find wind and practise kitesurf more often. I hope you enjoy it!

Ha! and the interface is mobile friendly :)

Hi,
Just one suggestion, change the type font! This extravagant type is ugly and difficult to read.

My two cents ;)
