rainx sucks for gorpros, turtle wax is better

Postby edt » Wed May 16, 2018 4:03 am

So I went out and bought another bottle of rainx just to give it one more try it was awful. I went back online and watched reviews about how rainx actually works, and apparently it doesn't just bead off the water with hydrophobic action, actually it turns large droplets into little ones and then the wind on your windshield is what is supposed to drive the tiny droplets off. For a gopro little drops are the mark of death for your video. A big glob of water is better because when that glob shakes loose eventually you are good. Anyway I went back to licking my gopro for a while and then decided to try turtle wax instead. You use it just like turtle wax on your car, put it on let it dry a little and buff it off. Works pretty well. Since I have all this turtle wax and and it would ruin the patina to put it on my car I also started using it on my control bar chicken loops to extend the life. Yay turtle wax. Xclear lens caps seem pretty nice, it's a hydrophic lens cover, but I haven't bought any of those yet to try give a shout below if you use xlcear (or other hydrophobic lens covers) and how good they work.

I put rainx on my old gopro and I'm pretty sure it ruined it. Had a really tough time getting any usable images after that due to how blurry it always was.

I usually just give the lens a good lick, that seems to work really well.

So glad someone else is having this problem too, no amount of rain x or licking has solved my issue. This guy recommended licking dunking or regular wax and buffing in this video on surf videography:

Also, just stumbled across this on amazon:

Let me know how those gopro drops work. For now I'm still using turtle wax.

I have been using Xclear for sometime. It works better than Rainx and every other solution I have been able to find, more of the time, just not always. The film needs to be replaced after six months.
