11 or 12?

Postby Beardytello » Tue Jul 10, 2018 10:00 am

Morning guys!

I'm padding out my quiver, I currently have a 9, 14 and a 17.

I feel I'm missing something between the 9 and the 14.

A couple of times now I've gone out on the 9 because I would have been overpowered on the 14 and it's been lacking.

So if this was you would you go 11 or 12?

I think it might depend a bit on the type of kite, some are more powerful and slow for their size than others. I (lower intermediate) have both an 11 and a 12 of similar type and I find the 11 is still quite fast, I can still (pussy) loop it quite easily without thinking too much about it, the 12 not so much and I usually just jump on it. I would prefer an 11 over a 12.

Cheers, yeah I've been sort of leaning towards 11 unless anyone came up with a solid reason why not. The extra speed would be nice.

I have on occasion looped my 14 but it's a fairly scary experience

If they are all the same kite, of the same year, I'd go for 11. If not...I'd still go for 11. The larger the kites, the larger the gap in between can be.

As a rule. Pemba makes a good point.

Ha ha, ok, that's 2 votes for 11 and my already preconceived sway towards 11.

I stopped buying a 11mtr, as it seemed just to gutless compared to the same make 12mtr, this was true for my North and Fone kites, it may be only 1 mtr but the feel is very noticable, if your into boosting and average weight then the 12 will please more often, as the wind is more often lacking especially in summer.

I own a Core XR11, tested the 12, the difference is not very big. Imo it all depends on the model of the kite. Some brands just scale down and up the same shape, other brands have different shapes for different sizes. No offense but I frankly can't understand a 4 kites quiver from 9 to 17, 3 max, maybe something like 9-13-17. When you're overpowered with the 13 it's time to go for the 9. Same for the 17. If I were in your shoes I think I would sell the 14 and buy a very powerful 12 or a 13.

IIRC you're a 'big boy' in the IOM?

Going 9m to 12m is very nice, so get a 12m and you probably won't use the 14m any more because if it's not blowing enough to make the 12m work you'll almost certainly go straight to the 17m.

11. Absolutely positevily 11.
For my 200 lbs the 9 is the best boosting kite and 11 is the regular. 12s are kind of slow...
14 worked for me in 10-16 knots
11 is the best from 14-22 knots
15 was my lightwind kite to cover 7-15 knots using TT/door and short/long lines to cover the range

What’s your weight and which boards/conditions do you ride?

I would vote 11 as well for a filler size.

12 if it's your biggest kite in higher wind areas. People looked at us strange in Texas when we pulled out a 14m.....

My 11m Pivot had more power than many 12m kites I've owned prior. The sizing is very different from brand to brand.
Demo ride available?
