If you want the buttersoft landing - take your kite over to 10oclock, and send it very hard forwards before landing... get the timing right so you'll glide another 5m just above the water. Sweet move
Let me know if I got it right.
- Ride right foot forward
- "Boost" to the 5 meter jump
- Keep the kite at 12 until I start to fall... timing?
- Swing the kite backwards to left to 10 o'clock after I start to fall... timing?
- Re-direct hard towards right just before landing
So basically this would mean doing a figure eight with the kite while in the air.

If you analyze jump videos with floaty high jumps you can see that kite never gets past zenith. You'll see that kite stays in high AoA downwind from the jumper.
From this you can think what you need to do.
- time kite input better
- steer kite better
- have slower draggier kite
Yeah, letting the kite go behind my back could be a reason for hard landings. But how do I avoid that? Or what would typically cause it?
It's clear I need to time and steer better, if there is something tangible that the better could typically be, please let me know

Depends on kite but usually keeping kite at 12 throughout jump kills lift for me as my kite don't glide so well, also it's hard to keep good stance when you are dangling straight down under kite, much easier to keep kite moving so it stays a bit deeper in window.
Anyway hard to tell what's wrong but usual mistake is kite over flying you, as you go higher you want to keep kite moving.
If your kite doesn't glide super well (or if you don't have good pop you will most likely fly downwind under your kite), it's better to move kite back and forth around 12. then aim for a hard redirect before landing. you want kite to fly through 12 hard when you redirect, meaning it's best to move kite a bit before 12 before redirecting hard forward.
For me the best is to keep kite before 12 until after apex, makes it easier to spot it and easier to feel the timing to redirect it before landing.

Riding in gusty, high wind conditions with a small kite can be a challenge. You may jump and midair the wind drops enough so that you have a hard landing. A small kite is way more sensitive to wind fluctuations than a larger kite, especially for larger riders.
OTOH, a gust might come along midair and you can get a second boost. Big rush when that happens.
Agreed that, in general, a smaller kite (I am thinking 6 m here) in high winds can send you up like a rocket and drop you, relatively speaking, like a stone. Not as much float because, presumably, the size of the 'parachute' is smaller.

Front loop it. Butter soft landings. Or front loop, land toe side and transition back the other direction.

There are some you can do if kite tends to overfly. One would be using larger kite (for drag = slowness), or steer left-right while airborne to prevent kite to overfly or heliloop your way down.
On really big jumps you normally see that kite is not moved much - but it stays downwind and high AoA. I think it is due to larger kite and optimum flight position of kite in regards to jumpers arch type of trajectory. So it is timing of steering and exactly correct adjustment?

Yes just as you run out of upwards steam - send back then forwards hard ...
5m is not very high so it will have to be quick.
Think about the lift we get from water starting when we use exactly the same principle - ahhh everyone gets it now

Not sure if it's your problem or not but holding the edge as long as possible before liftoff can help prevent swinging too far underneath the kite.

I am with the "lack of lift"
Unless your using a foil kite which gives a super soft landing anyways.
