Rarotonga and Aitutaki

I'm planning a vacation to Rarotonga in the end of the month, and I'm trying to decide if Aitutaki is worth it or focusing on Rarotonga is enough. In the following topic, there's a detailed description, but I thought to get more opinions:

Muri beach in Rarotonga doesn't sound so appealing (busy, small, strong current).
The recommendation of Aitutaki is the honeymoon island more than the lagoon.

My reservations about Aitutaki are that it sounds small and basic (and a tourist trap), and you have to make it to the boat in the morning, be back only in the evening, and basically be limited to an even smaller (bare-boned) island for the whole day.
