Tack, what to concentrate on in the first attempts

Postby vela99 » Wed Sep 05, 2018 5:28 pm

Hi,

I have seen and read plenty of tutorials but my first attempts were really terrible. Probably nobody would have guessed what I was trying to do.

Can anyone tell me what one or two things I should concentrate on initially ?

Thanks up front!

First: don't think.

Second: don't think.

Third: concentrate on your board. With good speed, slowly put your kite at twelve, depowered. Ignore your kite when at 12. When pointing extremely sharp into the wind, push your board through the tack. If it's not completely through, push it around with your new front foot. Only when the board is around, put your new back leg (fully) into the board.

It helps to pull on the bar, it'll give you some balance, and makes you weigh less....though it can also pull you of balance. Remember, the kite stays ignored, meaning depowered and around twelve.

When the board is around, dive the kite.

To rehash: don't think. Get the board around.

I got my tacks on one side close to hundred percent, in smooth water, in waves, in chop...the other side...hopeless! Still thinking too much, I guess :-)

This!

I learned the hard way, but if I had to name one thing that really helped me succeed, it would likely be this. The other advice also sounds good to me.

Tacking is way easier when you are well powered. If you do bankrolls is not hard to get oriented.
I think up-and-pull. I drive the board into the wind well after I pull the kite. The kite kind of stops the forward momentum then I pull to loop the kite as I reorient.

Most people drive the board upwind way too early.

One suggestion is work on kite control and footwork on land first.
Checkout this guy and his proposed steps; scroll to around 1:40.. (It's in russian, but pretty self-explanatory once you watch the video)

so in summary the key points which have been pointed out by several is:

- concentrate on board
- carry good board speed
- carve hard but not too early (in fact I think this is my problem)
- pull on the bar to take weight off the board
