this project was appropriated long long ago. Something has to be done...so many times this section of 12 get flooded and creates an an expensive road block on the island. You've lived this right? It sucks and creates horrible traffic deLAYS...THE ISLAND WAS EVACUATED last year and that really sucked. I won't get into it...it is what it is and it is a done deal. cheers ok!!

The island is being evacuated days in advance anyways. It took 5 years to build a permanent bridge over washout so I don’t believe in urgency of jug handle. Why not to build elevated road just a bit west of current road and certainly not through the sound in front of Mirlo beach.
I understand bunch of people would directly financially benefit from sacrificing Mirlo beach but most of the islanders and the tourist will not.
It would be nice if state redirects the money to areas who actually need the money to recover. OBX already got a bigger Bonner bridge (who knows why) so maybe take time and find a cheaper option without messing up prime kiting spot on the island
And finally let the islanders develop their soundside lots because those grassy swamps looks like crap and you guys can’t stop pouring poison onto mosquitos, just like you sweep sand off the road.
Somebody call you state reps and save $145M

We talked to an engineer a few years ago when they were doing the test boring in front of Pappy Lane. He said Bonner Bridge (like many bridges in the US) was about 20 years overdue for being completely redone. He stated it failed inspections to the extent that it should have been closed indefinitely.
Imagine the constant battering it takes every year with Hurricanes, current, saltwater and heavy traffic.
That would be a hell of a cannonball dropping off that sucker in your car.
But yeah bummed on the Jug. Please keep updating this thread on the progress. Hoping to ditch work this fall and get a week of riding in.
