Most people stay near the shore most of the time. Doesn't make offshore winds safe though!

ah.. another gem of advice.... dont kite sick conditions fir hours until u drop if you know what i mean .... need some reserve energy to get in.. and that reminds me.. kite with good competent friends that wont mske thinks worse if u get in a situations.. my friends have pulled me out of life threatening situations, and i have dobe likewise back... always a big pain when you travel to a remote heavy sick spot and your buddy didnt come too!
windsurfers have got better control than kiters i reckon in many offshore situtions. ie real full depower.. and real surfing smokes both by a million times in most situations.
Yeah this is key. Also because once you start getting tired you'll make a lot more critical mistakes then you otherwise would.

Yup. Once the dinw died and started blowing straight off shore I had to dive down and tie my kite to the reef.
Also Tilmann it looks like the video you posted speeds up just as the kiter passes??

I am a beginner but a good swimmer. A couple of times I went out swimming 3-4 km from the shore in calm weather and came back about 4 hours later. Tried it once more and coming back had head wind about 3 mph which started just when I was out 3km or so. Coming back took 6 hours instead of usual 2.I thought I would not make it back at all. Pretty sure that no one in the word can make any progress against say 15 mph head wind - probably not even an Olympic champion. What is their speed in a pool when they do 1500 m runs? It is about 6km per hour or 4mph actually...
Another thought is that most bad things happen when more than one problem hits u at the same time. I.e. dropping the kite into water is usually not a problem but if it hits water hard and deflates it becomes a real problem. Or inverts trying to relaunch.
My point is with off shore wind u already have a problem. This means that any small problem is not small any more and u automatically in trouble.
I think of this in terms of driving.
Sliding in a sharp turn and getting into opposite direction lane is not a problem when there is noone in the opposite lane. With offshore wind there is always someone there so the same mistake will kill u.
Personally as a beginner I would not kite in offshore wind even with boat cover. What if they don't see u being blown away because your kite deflated and under water? They will not see u unless they spot you in binoculars. And swimming back is simply not an option-see above.
