Need a new term for being lofted horizontally!

Postby Hugh2 » Mon Oct 29, 2018 3:30 am

Today in east central Illinois was super windy, and extremely gusty, with gusts recorded to 50mph on surrounding weather stations. We were all riding 5-6m kites. In addition to a couple of vertical loftings, I experienced something new. I was riding under reasonable control, kite at perhaps 30 degrees, when it was hit by a gust that yanked me through the air horizontally. It was clear I would not be able to land it like a regular vertical lofting, but managed to lift my board up and landed on my butt, skipping along like a stone. I need a new term for this!

:-).

You don't need a new term for this event, you're hardly the first kiter to keep the kite too high when hit by a gust.

Put it low, dig in, if necessary, slow down till a standstill during the gust. In between the gusts, don't let your boardspeed get too high.

I'd call this a tea bagging!

43 knot gust is easily controllable on 5 and 6m kites. Its easier than 18m in 30 knots.

I feel your pain :thumb: I did a downloop turn on my 7 mtr in a rare 35 kt+ day and and was yanked at full speed downwind over 6ft waves, quite the ride. :-o Then came the bad jump where I sent kite too far back and rather than splat down I did a quick downloop and ended up going 25 knots on my butt and then miraculously after 50 ft getting my feet under me and kiting away. Always amazed at how kiting is a totally different sport at higher winds. :accident:

It was an awesome day on water, Hugh!
The inland gusty winds always squeeze few stronger words from me, especially the day after coming back from OBX :)
