Fireball with slider bar question

Postby skideeppow » Sun Nov 04, 2018 8:00 pm

I have cab fireball and put on a slider bar for foiling.
I take off the fireball dongle and then use an O Ring.

The question I have it what weighted o ring would you recommend. My local hardware store has one rated for 200lbs but didn’t think that was enough.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have the same setup. I use a standard 2" stainless steel ring that I purchased from my local boat supply store. I don't know what it is rated, but I have had lines break while using this set up. The lines broke before the ring. I think you will hear repeatedly that it MUST be stainless.

Ok thanks. I was going to use a 1 inch. You think 2 inch is a better call?

A1 inch is a little small for the latch to rotate through. I don't want anything in the way of the QR.

Hi,

Found this swivel being best option up to today.

Didn't find a rated one but tested extensively this one in 35+ knots winds. According to the salesman that sold it to me should easily support 200kg. For wave riding I think it's more than enough.

A 5mm 316 stainless Eye-to-Eye swivel will typically have a breaking load of over 800kg. I use a swivel as the basis for my wheeled rope slider.

(In fact I don't use this any more, I have a Wainman above-the-bar swivel which I find easier to use with a simpler fabricated wheeled slider).

Try a "Ronstan Orbit Block 30"! A small shackle has to be added to it to connect the Ronstan block with the QR of the bar.
The roll of the Ronstan block glides along the harness rope without the slightest friction. Very very comfortable!

You guys are seriously endangering yourselves with those setups!

There is no where near enough space for the folded latch of the fireball QR to safely pass through those setups.

Also stay away from your local hardware store, you need marine grade stainless.

This is what I would recommend:
https://www.westmarine.com/buy/west-mar ... cordNum=42
Model # 111609 | Mfg # C0139-0525-W | UPC # 25282008407
O Ring, 3/16" Wire Dia. 1" Inside Dia. 500lb. MWL $2.99
Breaking Strength 4564 Pounds
** Make sure you select the correct one from the drop down, not sure if I can link to a specific one **

You need lots of space for that QR latch to swing through cleanly when you release.

EDIT: changed to 3/16", originally I had put 1/4" but that's too thick to fit in the Fireball.

316 stainless 5mm ring with 30mm ID with a minimum breaking load of over 800kg works fine. If you think 800kg is not enough use a forged ring (eg Wichard) but in any case you'll have far worse problems in life if the above 800kg is exceeded ...
