Just found this on the web. For your database Rick. This guy was lucky, because he stayed calm.

the question now is:

would this accident have been avoided by having a quick release?

Think about it:

you are getting lifted and you have a quick release which works.

Would you pull it when the lift starts?
We can't know how much lift we get.
If a gust hits me I'll wait until I get down. I wouldn't pull the release.
Maybe if I'm very close to the shore I would.

Hope I will never get lifted that much (without control)

I heard that he had a snapshackle. He deployed it after he hit the tree...

I gave the entire account from Pato to Rick. He should be posting it shortly. Pato could not release from his his snapshackle because he was over a hotel that was under construction with rebar sticking out. He was heading toward the street and power lines when he saw the tree. He aimed toward it and hit the tree full speed frontal, between his chest and knees.

Wow!!!!!!
so tell me for example.. he would have been harnessed in for this to take place.. it sounds like he and his friend saw the change on top of the water from this gust.. I can imagine it would of been a significant change of the water surface.. sounds like he lowered the kite to help w/ the gust.. but wouldnt it of been smart to at least of un-hooked from the harness ??? im just learning so bare w/ this question please ??
also say if he did un-hook and if had a saftey leash, wouldnt that of just crashed the kite to the water...? or say even w/ the safety leash would it be possable so much wind wouldnt let the kite depower??
*** would it be possible to make a safety release device that say may automaticly release say under a certain pounds per sqr inch... *** or maybe something along the terms of how a seat belt works..a seat belt only works if pulled quickly?
thanks Steve

Hi Steve,

if you unhook from a 4-line kite you will have more power. If you even have the power to unhook. If a gust hits you it is almost impossible to unhook immeditaely. Crash the kite and you have a second to unhook.

A auto release doesn't make sence because everytime you jump it would open because of the massive pressure and this is what you don't want.

Sorry to have been out of touch. I just came back from the Islamorada Kiteboarding Festival which was INCREDIBLE!!! The video and digital stills were great, so you all should be able to get a look at things. Next weekend, Miami!

I have tried to call the primary victim 8 times in Cabarete. Normally I give up after only two overseas calls but this incident is obviously special. There were multiple other victims including two girls who were parasailing who were reported to have suffered far greater injury (death and paralysis),as a consequence of the sudden squall off a nearby town. All the kitesurfers were extremely lucky considering how late many of the chose to come in before the squall hit. So, I hope to have the victims account from him directly soon and will post a detailed summary.

In the meantime, if it is black and nasty looking, don't wait come in well before the winds change or the temperature drops. You may well be far too late at that point.

Thank you very much for all your help in this Marina!
