My first build: quarter sawed douglas fir. Hand laid 4 oz cloth and epoxy. Handle is peach wood wrapped in 4 oz cloth and epoxy.

Nice build!
I am a bit concerned about rail radious. Usually straighter middle performs better. Did you had a chance to ride her yet?

Haven't had a chance to ride her with a kite yet as the only good wind lately has been with thunderstorms. I did wake surf with it and it seemed to perform fine but what can I tell being towed behind a stink-potter. I'll up date once I can kite with it.

Depends on what you want the board to do. . If you want it to be smooth In chop that an more ellipse shape works better than a rectangular rail.zob wrote:

I would not simplify!
When you say elipse, I immediatelly think of Mako which is IMO closest to elipse shape.
I don't see Saildawg's shape being similar to Mako (not that it has to be).
Elipse starts with high radious in the middle (flattish), and it gets increasingly tighter toward the tips.
Saildawg's shape starts with bigger curve in the middle and toward the tips seems to almost flat out.
I find this kind of shape hard for edging and bad for upwind, since the board tends to pivot in this widest area, and you get most lift here, which also results in bumpier ride, compared to board with balanced surface area. Even worse in chop.
It's not just about tip to middle width ratio. Throw rocker and bottom shape to the equation and we can debate for ages.

Bottom is single concave with 3 skegs. They can be seen in the picture. Looks like the wind will be fair this afternoon so I'll give her a try and let you know. Thanks for the input. If I don't like the action I'll enjoy looking at her on my shop wall and start another!

hey that is interesting with the skegs, hope it is a good ride.
If not, before you hang it up, consider making some incremental changes to it, to refine the design.
You could shave the width in the middle, add width to the tips, add or remove skegs/strakes whatever, throw on another layer of glass, etc, but one change at a time so you build your "database."
The alternative, a totally new shape, is more like taking another wild guess, unless you are going to just copy a shape you already rode and like.
But if it ends up on a wall it would look nice there....

This are 2 wood layers? Since we can't see the SS inserts I recon they are only through a top layer?
