Cedar Skimboard

Hey Guys,

Finally got around to finishing my first build. Still waiting on a new kite to ride it - should not have sold my old gear before getting new stuff in hand!

It is cedar 2x4s I picked up from a local mill. Used a band saw to cut my rocker shape into 5 boards and then ripped them each in half with a table saw. From there I biscuit joined them and clamped with wood glue.

After cutting out my outline a belt sander was used to remove material and get about 4mm of concave in a nearly successful attempt to conform to Tungsten's recommendations in the thread "what makes a fast kite surf board".

Shaped my rails with a router and then hit the whole board with 80grit and glassed. I used 2 sheets of 6oz glass on both the top and bottom of the board oriented 30 degrees left and right of the centreline. Applied flow coat and sanded progressively to 600gr.

Fins are supported with plastic plugs with a very slight toe-in. Total weight comes in at 9.7lbs. Wish I had gone with a lighter lay-up to bring that down a bit and add more flex, but I didn't know what I was doing when I bought the glass, hopefully she rides well!

Looks great. Should work fine with the weight.
But lighter results can come with thinner core and more glass.
Also, when choosing raw materials, some board are lighter than others, cedars range 18-22lbs/ft^3.
If you want lighter try thinning the core out overall and using 18-20oz glass. Just don't over saturate the resin.It's totally normal for a first build to weigh a pound or two more than you planned though, that one looks nice...
