First board lay up question?

Postby revhed » Thu Sep 03, 2015 10:10 am

So as I am not happy after many years with my cut and modified D R boards for my self made foils I want to make my own.
I will start with a bigger, 150 cm X 50 cm, thicker, 5 cm, extruded polystyrene core.
I have scraps of both 300g/m2 in carbon and F glass.
Should I lay up which first and why?
I am convinsed that one layer of each and 1,000g/m2 quadri carbon (16 cm X 32 cm top and bottom) for the strut to board section should be plenty stiff and strong.
Thanks for any and all info. :)

If you really need to mix carbon and glass, make sure you orient them differently.
300gsm carbon uni is pretty strong. Get the geometry and the core right, and you can do a lot with it.

For example, use a high density core where you expect buckling forces, i.e. at the mast/board interface. Something like a hardwood or rigid plastic like ABS. If you can prevent the core from collapsing, then the carbon skin should handle a fair amount of tension.
