Board building? Nah...A kite! Aka Cloud

Postby downunder » Tue Mar 08, 2016 3:22 am

Heya

Our season is fading and it's time to think about my next project. Pretty excited when found this:

http://www.zeroprestige.org/sewakite.pdf

I've got even better idea! Scored an 10yo almost brand new bow kite which I can try to make as strutless Cloud(y) (*tm) :))))

Is here anyone interested to chip some ideas how to?

Thx

D.

Rebooting this project :)

I just got a Cab 2006(9?) Xbow 9m almost brand new crispy kite, with a bar (with a hook loop -air style). So here is an idea:

- will take the struts off (the valves are long gone anyway). All seven of them.
- will cut the tips in a similar way as per Cloud kite
- will saw a new tip from struts offcuts, creating a long one as per C.
- will modify bridles as per C.

Would it work? Don't know. But will be fun making it:) What do you think?

You might cut off one strut at a time and fly it before cutting off a second strut.

With no research or double checking my data I recall that the clouds use more attachement points and bridle the kite differently. Consider re-bridling. sowing in extra attachment points. I suspect you will need the extra attachment points to hold the shape.

I also suspect you need a kite with a big fat le bladder.

The bladder on my 17m C2 kite is quite thin.......... and apparently they are thinner on the new C.5's.

Looks thin :) Look carefully and you'll see a double canopy, sort off like a proper wing! Or a foil and LEI hybrid. How is the air going in?

7 attachments points, no problem. The only thing is how much canopy is there? Measured from a LE start of sawing to the TE, looks pretty deep to me.

Anyone with this information or dare to measure? I am also after the tip length. Thanks!

PS

Struts are off, took me 1-2hrs to carefully remove. I think will need to re-saw a canopy after this:) So no, no way to fly it after the struts removal.

The other thing, a bar is now fully usable and modern bar. I so like giving a new life to forgotten and old stuff:)

I think you could likely pick a better kite for the project. I sold a 9m bandit to a guy who after getting a hole in the centre Stutt flew it for ages just fine without it. That kite was more C shaped, and already had straight wing tips. Wasn't one pump either so you could just test it with deflated struts to see if it would work. Might need re bridling, but I think there are plenty of kites worth keeping an eye out for this kind of project. Wainmans are another that I have heard fly fine without the centre stut inflated. Naish park would be another I would consider based on shape and wingtip along with any of the fuels with big wing tips. I.e. 2009 and newer. I think you have the size right. I'd definitely do a 9m. Great mix of power and speed.

Come to think of it newer generation wide wing tip 5 line c kites like the torch would be a good bet. Don't have to mess with bridling. And might need to keep the wingtip struts, but I would bet that could work without the middle three.

Worth trying first on something I got for free :) You're right about the shape tho. Cheers.

Good luck!
It occurred to me during the initial BRM C1 prototype phase that the C1 was, to a degree, a C kite with the bad parts removed.
And adaptation to more depower throw, etc. It ends up being quite different from a traditional C kite obviously.
C1 and C2 experience somewhat confirmed this, to fly them well C kite experience is helpful though there are big differences in power development etc. The C.5 looks like it goes both forward and back from this, looking more like a delta, and maybe a flatter arc bow, yet also more like the first low aspect lei's.
Several people have converted C shaped kites to strutless and claimed success.
It'll be very interesting to see how it goes with this project.
Maybe you end up with a C.75?
