My experience is that volume and Shape in the rail area is critical design factor on kite surfboard.
Boards I build are super thin over the deck but have rail shape and volume.

WOW TomW.

that is an awesome build.
seriously, that thing is beautiful.

Im starting my very first build at the moment (rocker table and vacuum built this evening)......
hoping for something in between OP and your build.
Not really into wave kiting, but im a big guy so i want a big, light, fast board, that will power upwing & through chop.
sorta a mini directional (155x45ish) not sure until it's finished

so far it 2 layers of foam core
will lay up hardwood top & bottom.
im also thinking of somehow squeezing something between the foam cores for extra strength.
remembering that im 125kg and I want this board to go fast and make me jump BIG!!

havnt even thought of the glassing stage yet.....
so many ideas and process' it's hard
what's your lay up TomW??

Zilla,

Adding laminates between your foam in the middle of the sandwich will only add weight. Strength comes from adding lamination layers on the outside.
My boards have so much concave on deck and bottom, longitudinal stiffness is sufficient with light surfboard layup, like 6 + 4 deck and 6 bottom. But laminate wouldn't take impacts and daily rough treatment.
That orange board has from deck : 4oz, 6oz, 1,5mm wood, 6o( under wood only) , foam, 4oz, 6oz, 4 oz.

You have to describe your foam core density and thickness, wood type & thickness. But my guess is that you'll only need to put a 6oz lamination and sanding coat to seal and secure the wood / foam sandwich.

How about a picture of your rocker/ concave table. How did you get so much concave with that rocker?? Table design info would be awesome.
I'm very interested in making a board like yours

Hello ,

the rocker table is no different than a regular twin-tip rocker table just the concave is exaggerated, since this
board was an experiment i made a simple form not a true rocker table , i have this photo which might help :

for the concave i put a batten with some foam strip on top so there is no hard spot in the 6 mm mdf
I hope this helps feel free to ask if you need some more :-)

Yep,

one can bend a perspex sheet like that. A few bricks under with a piece of wood, that's it...Secure with a clamps from a bending point.

Almost no effort or investment. Reusable for a different rocker, takes no space either.

By selecting the wood (sawn direction) correctly it is possible to make a high concave rockered board just gluing the strips together. No pressing is needed and the board will stay in its form when it is finished. Drawback is a bit uncertain final result (the amount of concave), but if some extra thickness is left it can be shaped later. If done well resulting board is stronger and stiffer than milled similar shape, because the grain follows with the board shape.

I made one years ago, it became 20mm concaved with 18mm rocker. I used aspen, which is light weight material with good strenght. Concave increased after glue up because material wasn't 100% dry, but I knew it would happen as a part of the method.
