5-0 DIY Vader

Postby Kaito » Thu Jul 14, 2016 11:09 pm

Hi fellow board builders,
In between working on a couple paulownia boards, I've started working again on a surfboard project, my first actually..
Thought I'd post the progress : )
Plan is to finish up the rail shaping this weekend & laminate within the next couple of weeks. Still researching/deciding on the best layup schedule...and trying to find that balance between durability/performance...
Will post a progress update post laminations on top/bottom! 8)

PS - I claim NO credit for the boards design as it's based on DanTomo's MPH, Vader. Much much respect to Tomo btw! m(_ _)m
Though this isn't a mirror copy of the Vader, bar far I'm sure, its simply my rendition :)

Thanks Terrie-san! :)
If you do start a surfboard, would be great to see some of your steps!

Kaito-san,
Round the sharp rails at tail before glassing. Fill with resin using tape barriers after / during sanding stages. Otherwise glass will not go around. R2 min.
Lamination schedule :
From deck thru to bottom :
4oz
6oz
6 oz deck patch
Foam
4oz
6 oz
4 oz

Laminate bottom first, tape off deck for lapp. put down 4 oz first, let cure. This make channel lamination and over boxes easier. Tenting of lam over channels is problem, therefore only 1 layer first. Use fingers to get it down. Don't stretch lam over bottom.
Then do 6 +4 on bottom. Sand to key surface between 4 and 7+4.

Grind lapp.

Then do deck in one lamination go. Lapp it over rail and grind off to tape.

Lamination and sanding those channels is challenging.

Hi Tom-san,
Wakarimashita! :) Thanks for all your tips!
Especially rounding the edge at the tail. I wouldn't have done that & appreciate the tip!
Finished the rail work yesterday so plan is to laminate the bottom tonight! Going with 4oz+4oz, as I don't want to weigh down the board too much & want to keep it somewhat springy. - I'll be sure to lam one layer at a time too! Arigatou!
& yes....not looking forward to the sanding..

Will post an update once the boards fully wrapped! 8)

Doing 4+4 in one go is possible, but being first time with those channels, it's better to do one layer at a time. It adds weight. But not many grams. Seal your blank first if using epoxy. Again this adds weight but you risk dry lam if your blank sucks a lot of resin.
After first lam cures you have to sand it with 80-100 g lightly, blow off, wipe down with denatured alcohol ( dna), blow off, wipe with dna, blow off. Do not touch with hands after this last step.
Then do 2ND lam.
Deck I'd do 6 deck patch, +4+4. All in one lamination step. ( no channels)
Even with sealing blank and doing 2 step lam on bottom board will be way lighter than a Firewire board.

Tom,

why not using a vac? The channels are not a problem. Sanding is not a problem either, using a peel ply will give rough surface.
If sanding is really needed, wet one is a go.

トムさん、いつもアドバイスありがとうございます! m(. .)m (45degree bow : )
Really, MUCH appreciation!

I'm tempted to post pics, but will wait till I get the top coat sorted..
I did manage to get the bottom lam on last week (one 4oz)...and learned a lot..(read - 'made a few mistakes'..) ... (o^^o)
Less than mid way into lam, the resin started to go off pretty quick, even with almost all of it poured onto the board..& a/c cranking..
In addition, only have worked with thin paulownia boards up till now, so I misjudged the amount to resin I needed to get full saturation through the rail wrap & to the cut lap..
With an emergency batch, I was able to make it through...but barely..Result; a fairly messy, dry spotty cut lap..

So, I managed to carefully sand out the dry patches & clean up the rookie cut lap over the weekend, plus get some color on the deck.
I'll be doing one more lam over just the rails today(4oz), to cover the clean-up job & add some strength. Could use the extra cut lap practice! After that cures, will lam the deck right after. Sched, top to foam; 4+4+4deck patch+vector net under standing area.
Would prefer 6oz deck patch, but I only ordered 4oz this round of supply order.. next board, 6oz for sure!

Resin & hardener are in the frig, plus have the ice-bath ready for the next round of lams! :cool2:
