HI Kaito,

even tho not all of us comment, you should know that your work is highly admired around the World :)

Arigato

PS I was under impression you'll use Black Diamond Vector Net, as this are seen on many boards :) The glue advice is applicable to BDiamond as well.

Thanks for mentioning that downunder! : )
I'm just a hobby builder, but the flattering comment is very much appreciated!

At the risk of sounding ignorant - I'm interested in a project like this over the winter here in Minnesota, and I recognize it looks like a lot of work and a Vader or Vanguard shaped MPH may be a long shot for a first board. Where might I start by ordering a blank, what tools are necessary, etc etc.

TomW - I follow your FB page and love the work you're doing based on the EVO shape (if I'm not mistaken). Is that an easier shape to start with over Vader?

That is beautiful!
I hope it rides as well or better than the Vader,
I had a ride on one recently and was blown away with the speed.
Magic board....and for the record your's looks better. You do work to be proud of.

What did you use to cut down 1/2 the finbox that goes into the channel?

KiteDR, there are good sources of blanks and build kits from Greenlight surf supplies and others in USA. Greenlight has some good guides online.
Biggest difficulty in building boards like vanguard and Evo with complicated bottom contours is glassing and sanding. If it's your first glass job, you will have difficulty avoiding tenting and Sand through. You'll have to start building to get experience.

Thanks very much for the compliments JR! : )
I've had a few rides on it this past weekend, experimenting with different fin set ups in pretty good wind & decent swell.
Verdict; it rides VERY well! Especially with a tri-fin set up : )

To shape/sand the tail channels, fin boxes included, I first used an electric sander w/small 6" sanding pad with 100 then 120 grit paper.
After that, I smoothed out and finished by hand sanding with a curved sanding block then moved on to wet sand with finer grit paper. I had a few very small burn throughs (over sanding and hitting fiberglass) so I had to re-gloss and wet sanded couple times...
It was a very tedious process, but worth it since the channels are an important ingredient in the board's design.
I should also add that when sanding with an electric sander, its really important to have variable speed so you can control how deep you want to sand. I was going to use a large, normal sander, but opted for a small rechargeable drill with a sanding disk. I found the rechargeable drill much lighter & easier to handle while sculpting the bottom shape. The speed is also very controllable. :thumb:

I was going to suggest Greenlight as well. Thanks TomW!
Very easy to understand and informative descriptions of the shaping and building process. I also found DaveSky's site and blog informative on different layups and overall designs. If you're really serious about shaping & want to stay informed and educated, I'd also recommend Matt Kinoshita's (Kazuma surfboards) youtube channel or instagram. Very to the point and informative advice from many years of experience.

As TomW quoted from Yoda, you just gotta "do" it..!
Its not easy or instant..at all! but if you enjoy building things & have the patience and determination to follow through on a design and finish it as you've envisioned, it is quite rewarding. : )

In my many hours of board building research, I ran across one quote that I found very inspirational;
"The laborer works with his hands,
The craftsman with his hands and brain,
The artist works with his hands, brain, and soul."

: )
