PU hoses need to fit very tightly over the inner rope, I even prefer to force it over the spliced on the end to prevent sand and dirt creeping inside the tube. This way the PU wears down with the rope inside untouched.

All the problems with PU comes from lazy design and manufacturing where they fit a small rope in a too large tube without sealing the ends. With sand then entering the empty space between the rope and tube you get wear on places you can't inspect wich are indeed a safety hazard.

My SK99 300 line weighs 1.1g/m and SK99 500 is 2gr/m

Here is how I do both ends of the depower rope on my carbon bars:

Thx,

The person I am building a bar for has a problem with centerline friction in between his fingers from one handed bar control. I am not worried about protecting the center line from wear by using the PU. I planed on a tight fit for the PU to avoid sand intrusion. PU is fairly stretchy if it is submerged in hot water. I have 3/16 ID PU and a 3/16 centerline. It should fit tight over the end splices.

I am rigging a couple of bars with different configurations. One I will have a single center depower line using 3/16 (4.7625mm) Amsteel. I want to protect it from wear, so I want to try covering it with 3/16ID Polyurethane tubing.

Is there a specific type of PU tubing I should be using. I was think of buy this on Ebay.

Although covering the centre line with plastic seems to be all the rage these days, it doesn't always result in being more reliable.
There's no harm in using plain Amsteel. Go up to 6mm to cater for wear and replace it when it starts to visually look suspect.
I very much prefer tube over the line, because in winter time, the plain rope will destroy the gloves between middle and index finger
assuming you steer the kite that way.

I made this bar for Cloud kites. Clouds only need 28 inches of throw to completely depower. It does not need to have a qr to release it to a leash. My goal was to reach peak minimalism. I am close.

25od/22id carbon tube. Same length as the Cloud CCS bar
22od/22Id 30 cm tube filled with epoxy and 10% graphite by volume for the center hole
Nylon Polyamide PA Plastic Round Rod Stick Black 22mm width x 12mm long plugs epoxied in the ends to seal them
10mm carbon tube epoxied into the ends for the steering lines
The center line is 3/16 dyneema
Shrink tube on the splices. Probably unnecessary but it looks clean.
I painted on a coat of epoxy on all holes to ensure smooth sliding

This bar floats very well with the air volume inside the bar.

This is a first attempt. I am going to try a couple of slightly different variations. Critique welcome.

171 grams + 95 gram 21m ozone racing lines = 266 grams total weight.

Very similar to what I did, though I didn't make the insert slug long enough, as purposeful destructive testing shows. I broke it over my leg by pushing hard on the ends. Don't try to ride unhooked. :D

Interesting

How long was your plug?
How did you make the plug? Mine was in a 22/20mm tube I slid in and epoxied

Did anyone try kevlar/carbon rod? Would hat be more resistant to breaking at the centre/plug end?

stiff leaders lines can mimimise risk of halfhitched bar deathloops

you can buy a clamp with a low friction hole in it.. harkon sailing brand? we used to clamp them onto alluminium bar.

years ago a friend made a complete bar and lines from a hardware store after forgetting their bar and lines on holiday to a placecwith no spares.. it completely worked.. broom handle.. the worst string ( it held) sone tubing....

I designed some barend for my carbon bars out of hollow 3D-printend soft polyurethane, they fit in a 25x22.5mm carbon tube and come at €30.- a pair.

An adjustable-wodth carbon bar incl barends and leaders is €189.- (ex lines, trim, qr etc.)
