I am rigging a couple of bars with different configurations. One I will have a single center depower line using 3/16 (4.7625mm) Amsteel. I want to protect it from wear, so I want to try covering it with 3/16ID Polyurethane tubing.

Is there a specific type of PU tubing I should be using. I was think of buy this on Ebay.

How about using this one:

I got a 21-19 carbon tube, so just add couple of mm of carbon reinforcement in the middle, and screw this on?

If going minimalist and light weight, better with hole through the bar. This is one I made for a local kiter, some reinforcement around center hole, graphite/epoxy coating for low friction. I also reinforced my own and it’s holding up fine.

I have been making a few bars with 55CM 22/25mm, with a 30CM 20/22mm sleeve filled with approx 20cm of epoxy/graphite. My center line is 3/16 Dyneema and my center hole looks like it is the same size as yours. I think I can make the hole a bit thinner in the width (front to back) so I get more strength. The length of the hole is determined by how far we want to freely turn the bar without causing too much friction on the center line. The width just needs to be big enough for the center line to slide freely. On my next bar I will see how thin I can go on the width.

I finished my frankenbar. 433 g total with 23M sk99 lines.
Now to test it in controlled conditions.
Do you know how much the SK99 lines weighed by themselves? I have bee trying to find specifications on the weight of SK99 line, but so far no luck.

4m of line weighs 4g on my cheap digital kitchen scale

Prototype 2 bar, I made by winding uni directional carbon around the center. I cut a 600mm long piece, 100mm one end, 50mm wide the other. The fibers are running along the 100mm axis. Then I wet the CF out on a table, wound around the bar, starting with the 100mm side, peelply, perforated film, breather, then dropped it into a vacuum bag.
This added over 2mm to wall thickness. Then I just cleaned it up and drilled hole, filling whole sides with epoxy and fumed silica to make a puddy.
I tested flex on it and it was quite more stiff than having 1mm wall thickttube on inside.
Sounds like a lot of work, but actually really easy.

Although covering the centre line with plastic seems to be all the rage these days, it doesn't always result in being more reliable.
There's no harm in using plain Amsteel. Go up to 6mm to cater for wear and replace it when it starts to visually look suspect.
