board with camber?

Postby direnc » Sat Apr 22, 2017 9:25 pm

I attempted to create my own mako out of two 4mm plywood sheets. Glued the sheets while adding concave and rocker using a simple jig. When I removed the board from the jig I ended up with a 150x43 board with 2.5cm concave, 6cm rocker, and 1cm camber (snowboard like).

I am concerned with the camber. How is it going to affect the ride? Is it going to ride well or should i go ahead and glass the board? Should I scrap it, and save glass, inserts and time ?

you can try it but probably not great.
normally if you ride flat board, the section between the feet will try to bend up like a camber due to water pressure.
I you start with camber, it may work if it doesn't bend more, but 1cm already sounds like enough.
of course, normal kiteboards have 2-5cm rocker at rest, and some may flatten a bit from water pressure, but likely not to create a real camber.
Considering that you only have 2 x4mm, I think you should be able to get rid of the camber (and make the board strong for jumping etc.) by adding a 3rd layer of plywood.
If you do, secure it well to the rocker jig in the camber area, make the jig with double the rocker you want to end up with, and leave the board in the jig for 24-48 hours if using epoxy.
Even after epoxy seems cured it can creep under pressure, and the pressure created at the bond line to make the rocker will be significant.
Do you have concave already?
At this stage you can also add it or tune it with the shape of your jig....
Whatever you decide to do, best luck!

Thanks for your input! I already have the concave, and I decided to give it a try as it is. İf it does not ride well, I can put a third layer of ply or some thin foam to cover the cambered area as you suggested later on.

1cm of camber should not be that bad. I know Ronix has been playing with camber in some of their wake-boards. Some people liked them but a boat/cable vs kite are apples and oranges. If the board does not ride good then it might be something else still. Pics of the build would help seeing what else could be causing problems.

Probably this.

But if you can afford it, finish the board, ride it and learn from it. It doesn't have to look pretty.

The first board I ever built was way too flexible and ended up with excessive camber in the middle. It was rideable but not much fun. But I learned from it.
I'm on my sixth design iteration and still learning.

Filled insert holes and rounded the rails today. Will put 200g glass on both sides and wrap it around the rails. The concave makes the board stiff and this amount of glass will hopefully be enough. It weighs 2400g currently. Will report how it turns out. Thanks a lot!

Looks nice. Way better than my first ugly board that weighed several tons, only rode it once.

Dincer

let me know if you need more SS inserts :)

For the returning customers, heaps better price :)

Btw, 2400g is, well, heavy for me. Trust me, you do not need 200g FG since already stiff. Go for it if you're like >80kg or more:)

What is not visible on your pic is a FG under the inserts :( With no FG, there is a chance to pull them out since the load is more concentrated.

Something for next one :)

This is what I mean. Pic taken after few years of bashing:

2400g for a 150x43 board is not bad at all!

Indeed, you're right, was thinking 130.
