Board skins

Postby rynhardt » Sat Aug 12, 2017 5:57 pm

We've recently moved to making the outer layers of the board separately. It's basically a few layers of glass and graphics, infused on glass.
The net result is a cosmetically perfect skin on the outside and a peelply surface on the inside, ready for bonding.
The main advantage, apart from the cosmetics, is that if there is a fu*kup, you only throw away the skin and not the whole board.
Finished an alutex and carbon skin this week, which turned out very nicely..

What sort of boards do you use these on?
I wouldn't imagine you could wrap the skin round the compound curves of the rails of a typical directional?

Twin-Tips only. Any slight curvature we have is sorted out by the vacuum.

In my early experimenting I'm sacrificing the weight of a not removed layer of infusion mesh within the underside of the board so I can get a cure against the polished mould. For the top side at the moment I'm considering options, I'm looking at moving to a smaller mesh grid size because my current grid size is faster infusing than I need. Some of the fly screen materials look promising.
It would also be interesting to try some low hardness polyurethane resin over grab areas of the board for better grip.
