I would glass that for the extra strength, but it adds weight of course.

looks good ! But you shoul put some glas on the top and for sure on the tail rail.
If you want to have a great looking board again, take a 165g carbon and but only that over the tail, this will be strong enough add maybe 50 grms
and will look great. Bottom just put a gloss coat and you will be fine.

I like the carbon fiber idea. Since it has those carbon rails anyhow it would make for an awesome looking tail.

So my next steps should be:
1. Sand the top to be as smooth as possible. I assume once I get the carbon fiber on top I shouldn't be doing a lot of sanding.
2. Lay out the carbon fiber and fix it in a manner that it looks decent.
3. Soak the fiber with epoxy. I remember that bending fiber around edges is very difficult. So, should I stop where the edge is sharp (where the bottom meets the rail)?
Also, since the tail is round, should I make incisions every 2 cm to allow the fiber to settle without wrinkles?
4. Let it dry and take on the bottom. Or should I put one more layer of epoxy on top?
5. Sand the bottom lightly and finish it with a thin layer of epoxy.
6. Go surfing!

Is that a good game plan? Thanks again!!

perfekt plan, just tape first the area you don't want to touch. then sand down the area you want to put the carbon, just slightly deeper than the rest.
Tape off the bottom, put your carbon on cut it a little bit when you have wet it out (NOT BEFORE), put some peel ply on top. Let it cure, put another layer of epoxy over and the deck is done. Now sand the edges on the bottom down to the tape, take the tape off , sand the bottom and lay down a layer of epoxy . With some elbow grease for wet sanding and polishing the board will look as good as new.

Good point with the tape. I tend to forget that but hopefully won't this time. :-)

I am also trying to figure out a good way to save the leash mount. Maybe drilling through the carbon at the very end?

fill the leash plug with wax. Do that before you sand down the board to make sure the is ZERO wax where you carbon should stick.
When everything is finished take a hole saw and open the plug, sand the edges slightly and you are done.

It took a lot of time sanding and messing with the epoxy. 40 min open time is a really long time for small repairs like this. I may get a different faster curing epoxy for the future.

I have now put on the carbon fiber. At first glance it looks alright, but I only dare judge it once it has cured completely.

See the picture attached.

for repairs or topcoats etc I use an epoxy resin with 10min pot time , sandable after 5 hrs.
Yur board will look better than new once it's finished.

looking good. 200 grit... if too many dips give it a sand them paint it with epoxy to fill dips.. then sand... easier

Good news. It's dry and solid as a rock! :D

I guess it is down to the last coat before I can get it in the water.

There are still some minor dips that I obviously didn't take enough care of before putting on the carbon. But I am probably going to let them be, as they are only on top of the board and hence of cosmetic relevance.

I haven't decided which layer to do first. The very thin epoxy layer on the bottom or the final coat on top. I am worried some dripping might occur and those drips will become solid and I will have to deal with them. :-/

Currently I tend to do the top first, and then sand off any drips and put the final very light coating last on the bottom.

Does that make sense?

Thanks again for all the help!
