I have decided to buy the new 2018 Mitu surfboard after mostly reading about it and testimonials since I can’t try it here before buying.
I have conflicting suggestions about size and construction. I am 5’10” weighing 185 pounds, a great twin tip rider, but only a decent wave rider (but will only focus on waves the next years kiting 100+ days) that doesn’t like to be powered on the wave to get the real feeling of surfing.... I mostly kite in choppy waters with medium size waves...
1) what size should I take? 5’6 or 5’8”?
2) if price isn’t an issue should I go straight for the carbon model? I am afraid it would be too bouncy in choppy waters? Or not a real issue? So carbon or regular built?
Thank you in advance for your comments and input
5'8'' for sure, I am 145 and ride the 5'6'' carbon. For plain wave riding standard construction is very good and softer than the carbon construction especially in chop, carbon construction is worth getting if you also want to do some freestyle because it is superlight!
Haven't ridden the 2018 carbon mitu but owned the carbon 2017 model which was ok even in chop on the knees. The 2018 model also has carbon stringers and unlike the 2017model not dual but single density pads, probably to save weight. Still should be good, I am now riding the 2018 carbon Signature and it is perfect!
Hi Windmaker, Sorry to go slightly outside the OP's thread, but could I ask you, What ride differences, carving, handling chop, freestyle, do you find between the Mitu and the Signature series ? Thanks.
The Mitu is an easier and more forgiving board to ride. Signature has thinner rails, less volume under the front foot and needs to be ridden faster. It really shines on bigger faster waves. The Mitu accelerates faster and goes upwind slightly better. BTW, I only ride the Signature in quad configuration, tried thruster configuration (usually my favourite) but the upwind was terrible.
For freestyle, I cannot feel any difference between the 2 boards. I also own an HB Anti 5'3'' (square nose/ tomo shape) dedicated freestyle board and it is all marketing hype for me. For my style when free styling,
Thank you for your opinions of the two boards, the Signature does look more "gunny" from the photos and dimensions, I haven't seen one on the beach, and judging from your videos, you certainly know what you are talking about !
I also think Quads go upwind as if on rails.
I weigh 75 k and 175cm , riding a 2016 Mitu, it feels slightly big for me, what size 2018 Carbon would you recommend.
Thank you for posting your instruction videos on YouTube, you have a good style and they have helped me quite a lot, excellent !
F-One Mitu surfboards feel bigger than what their size suggests and 2018 models even more so due to the slight increase in thickness under the front foot. Guess I would ride 5'6'' size if I was 75kg but it is also a question of personal preference. In any case a little to big is always better than a little too small.
