Hi all,
I wanted to say what's up to all kiting fans on this forum. We're from the wind capital of the Midwest...Northwest Michigan (Frankfort), and if you're looking for awesome, consistent and clean wind, check us out! Best place in the Midwest to hanglide/paraglide too!

They have good wind in Tawas too, as it is at the northern end of Saginaw bay. So, if winds are prevailing from the south or east (across Lk Huron), wind is nice and clean. In certain temperature conditions, you can get a nice off land wind (from the west) towards the lake. With regard to geography and lake weather, I would consider Tawas a good comparison to Frankfort, a kind of mirror as we have lake to the west - land to the east, and Tawas has lake to the east and land to the west - both have lake to the north and south.

When are the best winds for kiting the Frankfort area? Also, are the currents strong north of Point Betsie?

You might want to start a new post this one is from 2009 and thirdcoast kiteman hasn't been here since 2011. I can't comment on the best spot near frankfort, kited there but can't remember what my fave spot is. The strongest currents in the great lakes excluding lake Ontario are near port huron those suck. Otherwise it's all pretty typical longshore currents (there's nothing special about point betsie) and if the wind blows sideshore for a long time you might get a little bit of a current if you don't have a breakwall to ride behind.

Going to weigh in on this, Frankfort MI has the cleanest sand, great downtown brewpub 2 block off the beach, downright one of the most beautiful coast lines in the US. Wind however not so good especially summer, But when it does happens, a good South blow Magic! Clean rollers, with butter close to the pier.
Fall cool weather riding is where its at, double overhead waves, very little Water fleas (surfers) , which can be a problem, same with beached whales.
If skunked in Frankfort you usually have options, 5 miles down the shore you have Point Betsie, which will ThermalNuclear on a clear day, where theres no wind in Frankfort, it 9m there.
North wind go over to Elberta its on the otherside of the harbor piers.
No wind period Sleeping Bear Dunes national park, Most beautiful National park in the US.
Not to mention M22 riding spots from Manistee to leland and beyond, ya Just cant beat it.
Oh ya Did I mention UNSALTED water.
