Board off Questions

Postby flybykite » Sun Sep 29, 2013 7:55 pm

I can nail one foot front rolls/ back rolls, big airs, etc. flawlessly but the board offs are not getting timed right.
Sometimes I can land them but not smooth or often.
Question is:
Toby, do you use the micro hook for all your board offs? I noticed in your video that the introduction to board offs you use your back hand to take the board off and steer the kite back in with the front. But, for the rest of the video, you exclusively use your front hand to take the board off and use your back hand to push up and steer the kite back into the window. Any reasoning behind this?
I haven't tried it this way yet. Seems awkward still.

I'm 64 kilos and use a smaller kite, usually 11m Ozone Edge in 20-25 knots for the airstyle. Ive just made myself a new bar with the micro loop/hook and I hope this will change the game for me and allow me to easily steer and correct with one hand while messing with the board in the other.
So far I've had real trouble steering the kite into the right spot with one hand and no micro loop.
Thanks,
Stephen

for every jump without rotation I use the microloop!
Normally I take the board off with the right hand when not rotating.
When rotating, I use the left hand!

Yes, the ML will make it much easier for you to get the right timing. First of all more hangtime, and second the steering forward with the backhand on the bar is easy.

Make sure you trim the 11 as slow as possible. Slow kites are key to land tricks!

Let us know how it goes!

Hey Stephen

If I were you, I would get myself bigger kites.

I weigh like 65 kilos as well, and I always had problems with landing the board offs.
I Always used the rebel 2011 12 meter, now recently started using a peter lynn fury lite 15 meter.
Doing the board offs I so easy right now,

It,s better to get a bigger kite.

Then all your problems will be solved

I don't know if he can hold a 15 in 20-25 knots with 64 kg...the 11 already sounds good for this wind.

Since I am 95 kg I can only imagine...and not know. You have to see if you can!

Can you post some pics of your bar? I'm thinking to do the same...

I Found it also easier if you bring the footpads closer to each other. It took me a while to get the board off right but the biggest help was when I moved the footpads closer to each other.

I see this thread got resurrected. I'm happy to report that board offs are no longer a problem even on my 9m edge but ya, I've got a 11 and 15 as well and its even easier. Working on getting it done with a front roll. I've only landed a few. I'm thinking that my len10 waist harness is not helping me use the handle though as I'm only able to do board offs from the fin and cant reach the handle most of the time.
As much as I loved the Idea of using the microloop to assist in board offs, I've only found it useful for deadmans so far and its gotten hooked in dozens of times when I didn't want it to. Can be dangerous.

Make sure to slow down your kites by using the settings on the bar and kite for it.
This will help with the right timing.

My hands are almost always in the center of the bar. This way it is easy to hook in or out with the microloop using your thumb. Get used it it. I barely have any unwanted hook ins.
