That is what I was trying to say to Westozzy. So on a loaded 5th, there can or should neverbe slack above the Y. Only on 4 line kite with 5th as safety.

Not true. Loaded fifth line doesn't mean it should take more load than front lines or the Y in this case. When they say slack they mean just a tat to make sure you don't fly the kite off the fifth. If you do you will loose the range, stability and will experience weird bar pressure with gusts kicking the bar if you will.

Yes okay, we are talking about small degrees of excess loading after the Y on that fifth. I get the principle now. Will make some nose extensions up today and experiment.

Although I'm not experiencing any of the above...it flies just fine. We will see.

Just received this from puetz and I reckon the difference may be greater with the older bars (I noticed it the other day out on the water with someone riding the same kite but with a 2015 bar...(mine are 2010, 2011 and 2012 bars).

Hey dude,

I discovered yesterday that the 5 line bar are slightly different between 2015, and 2014/2013. I found that the Y point is at a different height by about 1 meter, with the Y point lower on the 2015. And the little ball on the 5th line above the Y is slightly longer by ½ a meter.

I wonder if this would make much difference but then again, in today’s world of highly tuned kites, it may make a difference. We know a cm here or there between each line would make a difference so I wonder if the new 2015 kites have been designed around the lower Y and will perform better on the slightly lower Y.

When I get a bit of wind I’m going to try it with same kite, but different bars, swapping between the 2015 and 2014 bars.

Cheers,

Robbie J

Ps both bars were the 27m bar, will check to see if Y on 24m bars are different.

good idea to test both bar...very curious about the outcome!

Loaded means IMO: always pressure on 5th. Never slack, so always tension, no matter if powered or depowered.

The Dyno 2011 had a slack 5th line when fully powered up.

Well I measured a 2010, 2011 and 2012 bar to be about 12.8m give or take given different stretching/use. Awaiting of Robbie to measure a 2014 and 2015 bar. Dan at north has mentioned a lower Y on the 2015 and I did notice this on the water when riding passed the other dude..who was a sick air stylist by the way...

I wonder what the effect of a higher Y on kites designed to fly on the lower Y 2015 bars has on the overall loading on the fifth?

Anyhow in the meantime made up a nose length piece to increase length 5/10/15/20 cm...time to experiment.

I'm having trouble pasting in the measurements from an email, shitting me to tears...Bar measurements:

2013 well used bar 24m bar: 12.70m (ring to loop ends) 2.4m (ring to ball)

2014 well used bar 24m bar: 12.65m (ring to loop ends) 2.4m (ring to ball)

2014 used once bar 24m bar: 12.90m (ring to loop ends) 2.5m (ring to ball)

2014 well used bar 27m bar: 12.70m (ring to loop ends) 2.3m (ring to ball)

2014 half used bar 27m bar: 12.77m (ring to loop ends) 2.4m (ring to ball)

2015 never used bar 27m bar: 13.90m (ring to loop ends) 2.95m (ring to ball)

- Well used means used for about one year
- half used means used for 2 months only
- used once means only used 1 time so brand new
- never used is a bar never flown, brand

So Robbie is thorough as per normal. Bottom line is the Y on the 2015 is a good metre or so lower ...enough to probably have an effect...maybe?

For this reason I am not a fan of a Y set up. I like to look at five equal length lines to tune five line kites to compare the curve of the front lines to the fifth with the bar pulled in. The fifth should curve just a hair more and then it is perfect.

Where's your in depth nitro review? The ones coming out are just horrible. 'It's got good hang time' and 'it turns faster' oh boy...

Bad news the winter came early, Buffalo on the US side got 1m of snow already. It is only say 20 km from the spot on Lake Erie where we go on SW direction which is normally 12C air 12C water at this time. It's over until Jan 18 in Cuba.
