The slower the kite the more control you have. Plus if you have good bar feedback you feel where the kite is.
A small kite is hard to control, one little steering mistake and you get accelerated, which leads to bad crashes. That's what I am saying: the slower the kite the more you will progress, since you have trust in your kite that even if you crash it does not destroy you.
If I would fear to get injured badly I wouldn't do any tricks neither...that's why most people don't progress.
But what can happen with a 16 sqm kite in 15 knots? But what happens with a 7 in 30 knots? I would fear a crash every time I would approach a trick...then better do nothing.

In 6 years of filming I hurt my rib and foot for a week. Plus my thumb for 1 month. That's it. But pushing the limits to land 2000 tricks. Thx to my 18s.
That makes a lot of sense to me. Thanks! Helpful!

Lindsey, just did the stats for todays session...so you have an idea:

135 attempts
48 landed tricks
about 40 new ones

so more than a third I land.

But also depends on what tricks I try to land. Really hard ones have different stats. Today did many which were easy (for me) so I landed a lot.

Cheers

Thanks, Lindsay! That’s really sweet and encouraging. Finally someone who hears what I’m saying! Yes, I need to be mentally prepared for a crash. I’m terrified of crashing, especially of dropping the kite while crashing. It happened once, I totally lost control & direction & never tried again. But I can hold down bigger kites in 18-25 Knots with my 55kg (that’s wet!) and I try not to drop my kite, ever, so if you have any tips on how to crash without dropping the kite I’m all ears! Thanks, guys, this is a very helpful discussion!

That darkslide was delicious Toby! Nice
Yes, crashing is something you will get used to in time and to mirror what Toby has said, the bigger the kite the better. You will get to a point where you have such a feel for kite that you could be skipping across the water (or even underwater) and you know exactly where the kite is in the sky so you can redirect it to ensure it does not get wet. That said, if you do crash the kite make sure you give yourself plenty of room away from others.

One final thing to mention, make sure your mobility is in check. You want to be as flexible as possible. No, you do not have to be some yoga pro but at the same time, you don't want to be so stiff that crashing results in pulled muscles. Crashing is a funny thing especially when powered. You may go skipping across the water or may just sink and then get pulled out of the water a bit. Either way, your body needs to be prepared for being jerked around in unnatural positions. Flexibility is what prevents injury...at least in my experience. So, an important part of training should be daily (if possible) stretching and mobility exercises to condition the muscles a bit. I will usually just do a few minutes of hamstring stretches, shoulder stretches, and hip stretch per day. Then, 2 to 3 times per week do 30 minute yoga routines using the "Downward Dog" app on my phone (highly recommended).

I just stretch 5 min before my session. No problem in warm water and air...but cold? Stiff as can be...cannot even reach the board! Can you imagine?

Thx Toby & Lindsay! I’m flexible enough and my go to board is a razor sharp wake-style weapon, but when you say I have to get used to getting my body twisted in weird positions you kinda scare me... I think I’ll play it safe for now and just use the bunny waves as ramps until I get super confident with my landings. Would you recommend learning to boost in choppy waters anyway? I think I’m well aware of the position of my kite, I think. (I learned to kite getting through an unforgiving shorebreak, so that taught me to keep the kite up no matter how twisted and submerged in the laundry) But jumping over chop makes my stomach queasy...

Yes - at the end of the day do only whatever you are comfortable with and don't push it. Boosting in chop is an absolutely blast !! I say learn to boost in as many conditions as possible. I am mostly in flat water so its a different kind of boosting but using a wave as a kicker is sooo fun.
