Which boards have the raised edge for use on the park?

Postby Balser Boy » Tue May 23, 2017 6:11 pm

Hi guys!

Just ask about the boards on the market that have raised edge to use on the park: sliders, kickers, fun box, rails, etc...

Cheers!

You don't need any special edge, you CAN ride any board on features.

BUT

You'll trash the bottom if you do it frequently on a board without a "grind" or "slick" base. What that base is, is a HDPE (what your thick plastic cutting board is) or sintered material (like you'd get on skis). Also boards that are designed for wakestyle riding (ie features) you're going to get more rocker, stiffer flex, usually thicker edges, and most now have bottom concaves that help with upwind ability without fins.

Some of the wakestyle boards that come to mind:
North Gambler
Tona Pop
Cabrihna CBL (use to be the Custom)
Liquid Force Echo (website doesn't say if it has a grind base..but probably does)

I have the fifty from 2014 I think, you can put boots on but it's surprisingly light, though so far it's been very durable, I honestly don't know for sure but I don't think it has a grind base to hit features, also it has more flex that you probably want.
I think the recent version have a stiffer flex, they have added some carbon in there to make it more appealing to boots.

About raised edge, in wakeboarding the boards have curved edge like you say, they help with sliders and such so you don't catch an edge ;)

Yeah the newer 50's are a little stiffer, but no where close to say a gambler or pop. Can't say anything about if it does or does not have grind base. Based on those two things I didn't mention it.

I did forget about the Slingshot Refraction Pro

I'm not sure what the raised edge thing is you are referring to? Anyway wakeboards are generally built to withstand more abuse (ie more reinforcement and heavier) and have more rocker than kiteboards. More rocker gives more control at the expense of efficiency.

Park boards typically have a grind base, which adds more weight, but is more durable over obstacles.

Beginner boards have rounded edges which are more forgiving. Pro boards have sharp edges which gives more traction.

And then there's a whole range of variations in flex, outline, size, bottom profile, cores etc. to consider.

Sorry for going off topic, but I don't get why concave would help with upwind ability?
Concave helps to stiffen the board and it makes landings harder.

NorCalNomad said it, if you don't have fins concave and channels helps with edging and tracking upwind. You don't think so?

Can you give an example of a board with a curved edge? I would be really interested in trying one, as I've caught more back edges than is healthy for me. Every time I land blind without digging an edge I thank my personal deity.

Channels yes, not as efficient as fins, but they do provide lift. Concave, not so much. It may provide like one degree more edging than a flat bottom. Nothing significant, in my opinion.
