Backrolls vs backside handle passes

Postby podiatanapraia » Thu Nov 01, 2018 6:06 am

Hi everyone. There's something I haven't been able to understand about how tricks are named. Let's say you're riding on a port tack (to your left) and you unhook and throw a backroll. That means you rotate your body away from the kite, turning to face upwind first (whereas, with a front roll, you would turn turn towards the kite, facing downwind first). However, if you're on that same port tack and you unhook and spin away from the kite, facing upwind first, but do a handle pass, this would be a FRONTSIDE handle pass, even though your body is spinning in the same direction as it would with a backroll. So 2 questions:

1. Did I get anything wrong in the description above?

2. If not, does anyone know what the logic behind this naming system is?

Appreciate it!

1. Yes, you've got the concept of backroll wrong. Backroll is kinda cartwheel-style rotation, where you get inverted, legs above your head. Let's say the rotation axis is roughly through your bellybutton. If you do this "cartwheel" from front to back, it's logically backroll and other way around.
If you do raley first, and then start frontside rotation/spin, it's called hinterberger. I think this is the motion you described.

I think that the biggest thing making this confusing is that most of the so called hooked-in backrolls you see are not actually backrolls, but somekind of hooked-in frontside rotations/spins.

In kite-boarding terms you have it correct. In wake-boarding where the trick comes from it is not that simple. Backrolls are inverts they came from wake-boarding and get there name from the first person that landed it in a competition. Most trick names like back-mobe, s-bend, ect. ect. came from wake-boarding.

Now they are a bit different in kiting because the higher the kite goes the less inverted you can get. Kiters for the most part don't know the difference between a proper backroll and spinning under the kite. They just don't wake-board so the name gets used for any frontside rotation where you don't pass the bar.

A handlepass as you describe it is just a frontside 360. It all just really comes down to where the names came from and the different sports. Even though they are similar they still are different. If you want to know what a trick is based on the name then just look it up in a wake-boarding video. If not just stick to having fun kite-boarding.

It is confusing for sure that a backside handlepass is going the same way in regards to rotation as a frontroll. On the other hand there are also all the weird names that wake tricks have. Crow, dum dum flavor flip fruit lop slurpy speedball whirlybird osmosis moby dick batwing hoochie krypt vulcan blender crook diesel mexican roll.

At least with the frontside/backside frontroll/backroll there's only one thing to remember.
