New kite for hydrofoiling

Hey guys,

I am looking for a new kite for 5-15 knots. I have a Zeeko Maikira freeride hydrofoil. Now am I unsing old Cabrinha Contra 14/17m.

I am 85kg and my foiling level is Still beginner. Normal riding With a twintip I can handle everything till 45 knots.

What kite would you here suggest?

It depends on your weight and skill level, I find the Ozone Edge 19m good for 5-10 knots, ozone Edge 17M 6-12 knots. Any 13M 7-18 knots and I weight 65kg.

I am riding that same foil: Makaira Freeride 2014.

I am 87 kg.

I am riding the new Cabrinha Velocity 2015 14m and I am extremely happy in winds between 6 knots (27m. lines) and 16 knots (24m. lines and fully depowered).

This kite has an amazing feeling in her whole wind range, crazy performances and great user friendliness.

Would suggest any "light" kite with power and higher AR for the ultimate low end, around 13-15m2.

Eventhough I can NOT see you can use one kite for that windrange, no way

So for winds above 10 knots, you can use ANY kite you want or have now, as any kite will hang steady in 10 knots no matter what type and weight.


In 15 knots I can easily ride with a 7m2 depower (wave) kite 22m lines no problem, and a 9m2 works fine too but quite powered.

In 8-10 knots I ride with a 13m2 really light high AR Dyno on 29m lines.

But using the 13m2 in 15 knots, I would never do on purpose

Possible to "survive" and ride ashore of course, but not much fun being overpowered so insane

In the range 8-15knots I actually can use 4 kites, depending on purpose (and because I HAVE these kites for waveriding).

I use something like this for hydrofoil freeride.
Not the full windrange, but what size I most likely would choose if going out when this wind is on :

13m2 Dyno 7-10 knots (3.6 to 5 m/s)
11m2 Furia 10-12 knots (5 to 6 m/s)
9m2 Furia 12-15 knots ((6 to 7.5 m/s)
7m2 Furia 15-19 knots (7.5 to 10 m/s)
5m2 Log 19 and up (10 m/s and up)

Average weight 77kg and using the same foil as you Niels, and always waves and or chop in open ocean, and most likely the same temperatures in NL as here in DK.
If you have 30 degree or more and stable winds, you can use the kite pleasant up much higher of course, but also have a worse low end.

You need two kites for that range IMO.

One 13-15m2 light wind kite for ultimate low end, and maybe a 10-11m2 "any kite".
As then you can cover 7-16 knots with 85kg and feeling comfortable (as I dont believe you can ever ride in less than 7)

But we dont all agree it seems, as Hawaiis and Andokite can cover a much bigger range without feeling having the wrong size, so my advice is maybe just me and how I think/feel.

I agree all the advices above are great about the high aspect ratio kite.
So what it boils down however strutless are NOT suggested Any Kind, mainly because of the range
and on & off power attribute
caused by bastardized limited canopy support,
Those kind of limitations are not desirable in foil riding since as soon as you start planing, already riding in apparent wind,
therefore becoming overpowered with limited range

Yes, because of the apparent wind race kites are highly recommanded. Hopefully more kite brands will pay attention to making pure racekites as right now the selection of brands is very limited
Hint - If you want a pure 4 line racekite with one pump system, you can maybe choose from 3 brands. If you want a foil kite for race max 2 brands.
With hydrofoil as the "new black" many brands are sleeping. WAKE UP!!!

Can you really ride pleasantly powered (not powered too much) in 16 knots with a 15m2 Chrono, around medium weight ?

Without having tried one, I know for sure I can not, not even close
