jellyfish boards foil a year at design

well I am at the next set on my progress thanks to a couple of great friends

I have been at it for a year now working my butt off on it, hitting road block after road block.. Now It is time to press the pieces. Laughingman and I spent today cutting the final parts to the puzzle that were one of the biggest road blocks.. From drawings to CNC

the drawings wouldn't work at frist do to me not knowing how to use Rhino. A year later I can draw a wing in a hour. The cnc that I was using at first had a bad z axis and went weird on us.

Shaun stepped up and offered to help me redraw the foil ( thanks Shaun) it worked out great but he was having problems with wings also figuring out were to spite them for the molds.

I figured out how to draw the wing molds and I got to say it was a lot of work but I got them and they look sweet ( thank you Laughingman ) With out these two guys I would of tossed the towel in must likely or maybe not I wasn't going to let this one beat me. Their help just added to the joys of doing this.. Two people with the same interest helping me along the way asking for nothing at all... They are both getting a free foil from me just because of what they did.

To be honest it would of been cheeper to buy one now with the time and material I have spent

Hope you're feeling better Terrie. That was a marathon run of cutting, I don't think I or that machine has worked that hard since it replaced the old one. Imagine a year ago I could badly turn it on. Today was a milestone and I still think there are improvements to be figured out but this is certainly the most productive cutting day we have had yet.

Are they machined out of engineered wood?

I'd be interested to know how you prepared them for use? Sealed and waxed?

The wood is MDF or medium density fiber board. It is inexpensive, soft and easily machined.
How they get prepared from this point Terrie will have to comment.
I can machine aluminum as well but these are a good starting point as cutting aluminum will require more cost and time investment.

I seal the molds with a high end polyurethane paint. Which they spray airplanes with..

I first sand it alittle then prime it with a 2k primer .2-3 coats of primer sanding between each coat

I sand it with 280 on the last coat them spray the polyurethane which will bite into the primer and fill the scratches with no problem... I spray one one wet coat and let it dry over night at 80 degrees and the next day sand it out with 400 and spray another coat of polyurethane.

I let them set for about a week before I wet sand them and buff them to a mirror finish.

next step is a good release and you are off and running.
The moulds should last a while as long as you are nice to them.. But we will be cutting some alum ones once I make sure everything is perfect

I have thought about spraying tooling gel but it would be a shit load of sanding
