So to be clear, you're foiling there a lot, south of the shipwreck, and it's deep enough to go places? Heading up in a few weeks deciding to foil or not to foil.

You'll have to go out roughly half a mile anywhere on the sound-side to get adequate depth to foil.

I foil there every time I go to OBX. Last I rode there two weeks ago and I'm heading back coming weekend.
The spot south of the shipwreck is great and you have to walk about hundred yards before you can start foiling (I ride on medium sized 35" mast). Take the foil with you!

Unfortunately no public access. We rented a house right in front of it and that did it. Houses south of the channel would work out too.

Thought I would revive this thread since I live here and started foiling this summer. If you're visiting I'll add one spot several of us locals like to foil. It's the soundside event site in Nags Head just before the causeway connecting Nags Head to Roanoke Island. We ride it on S-SW-W-NW wind days. No summer grass or long knee deep shallows like Rodanthe, Avon and Buxton. 20 yards to 4 ft depth and you can work your way out to 5+ ft pretty quickly. Most of us still ride shorter masts (60-75cm) here but you could pull off 90cm if there is enough west in the wind (higher water level). We don't always get the same wind strengths up here like they do in Rodanthe-Avon but you obviously don't need it for foiling (I get away with 6M on the strong days and 10M on lighter days). On the strong days or building thermal days (S-SW), grab your tt after foiling and there is a nice slick behind Big Penquin island to ride.

To much east in the wind and it gets shallower and gusty. Ocean side is generally better up here with N-NE-E-SE wind directions, though I haven't graduated to ocean foiling yet. Our kiteable ocean conditions can be pretty messy at best, and the beaches up here are busy with vacationers in the summer. Oceanside here is much quieter, and more fun in the fall and spring

The NOAA chart shows this area as pretty shallow. You think I'd be able to foil there at all with 1m mast?

South end of Avon near the creek I had many sessions on 101 Vorace. Good body drag practice out and in but just fine. I did hit a number of rays though.

I've ridden often at the nags head event site/windmill Point spot and would not be eager to foil there with a >70cm mast. There are many shallow areas where you would have a hard time restarting if you come off foil, unless you are very good, have a short mast, and/or ride overpowered.
My peeve about the area is too many times i scrap bottom with my surfboard fins, if I ride (too) near the islands.

We foil at the Nags Head Event Site all the time with 60 to 75 cm masts (I use 60) -- once you know where the shallows are, it works fine, and the bottom is soft enough that we've never damaged wings or fuselages hitting bottom Worst case is you have to walk a minute or two to get to navel-deep water. Out beyond the second island it's fine everywhere. But it is just too shallow (except on exceptionally high water) to use a full-size mast.
