Outer Banks foiling spots

Postby tmcfarla » Mon Aug 29, 2016 9:12 pm

Does anyone know of good locations to foil in the Outer Banks on the sound side? I usually kite around Buxton when I'm there, but only twin tips and surfboards.

I've seen folks foil at Kite Point...have to stay in the channel / holes though

In Rodanthe south of shipwreck, or almost anywhere, just walk out a bit and ride

I live within day trip distance of OBX, so used to go down there quite a bit for the better wiND and flatter water. Now that I'm foiling I don't bother too often.

I've ridden around quite a few spots on twin tip checking water depth and looked over all the NOAA charts. If youre within a half mile of shore, there are shallow spots all over the place. If you drag out a half mile pretty much anywhere though, its pretty deep.

I know one guy was happy foiling at canadian hole, but it's pretty small. I think the deep area is only about 400m by 400m (1/4 mile). If you're learning it would be a good spot, but if you're going fast, you'll run out of space really quickly.

He said soundside. No shipwrecks in the sound, my friend.

I have been to Hatteras a few times since starting to foil. the ocean sessions were great. Sound side not so much. I went out at kitty hawk kites location and sessioned in a south west wind early summer. I had to walk out a bit. About the distance the island slick is off Real kiteboarding. 300 yards out maybe. Once out there the water was waist to chest deep so the depth wasn't a major problem. The weeds though sucked big time. I didn't enjoy my session. However, I talked to a couple of people with low aspect cab and LF boards that were learning and just starting to get extended rides and they Weren't bothered by depth or weeds. For me Hatteras is an ocean side focused foil location as it has been for a while now on kite surfboard. I wonder if there are seasons in Hatteras or locations without all the floating weed. Someone know that?

Oh yeah, forgot about the seaweed also. That was a problem when I used to ride my raceboard down there. I think it was worst in the summer from what I remember.

I think davesails7 is right. Summer is worse for the grass. I think it's because the SW wind during summer drives the floating grass into the island. In winter, the N and NE wind drives it away.

Sure there is! Lydia Ann, sank 1895
I ride there a lot

She sticks out of water and is rusty and dangerous as it can be, be careful!

Well, I stand corrected. I had no idea. I will head out to take a look. And you've given me my next historical research project, grigorib. Thanks!!!
