Dear Toby, can we improve this forum for builders ? Please!

Postby tahoedirk » Mon Oct 03, 2016 5:20 pm

Hello all/Toby

I was hoping we/Toby could add some topics or sub - genres to this hydrofoil forum. I would love to see a DIY or homebuild section in this forum as well as Stickys and threads that continue for years and even hundreds of pages. I built discus launch R/C gliders for years with the amazing help of people I met on rcgroups.com . That awesome forum was a link to the most comprehensive and hi-tec information and kind helpful people that one could hope for. Sure it had flaws and petty quibbling, but that's part of the deal.

The French have a huge community of KBHF builders and are still arguably ahead of the game on design. I think this is because of their forum. I have many many hours of building successes and failures which I would love to share and swap with like minded builders, but I have not been able to connect with them in English yet. This networking could seriously advance design, save time and countless unnecessary mistakes and promote simplicity and sensible design. The best Research and development can indeed come from the private sector!

Subjects like "help me choose a hydrofoil" and "hydrofoil videos" should always be available of the first page or close. Some questions get asked over and over instead of just continuing in a long existing comprehensive thread.

I want to build and share and learn at the same time ,but the feedback I have received from my limited posts have been less than motivating. I think this is only because building posts occupy the same space as beginner tips and kite reviews. A section where only interested builders visit might funnel the attention to it's appropriate place.

Anyhow , Thanks for a great forum, I check in daily with great interest. Foiling has been like starting all over again in 1984 with whitecaps and weather radios!!

Thanks for listening, Dirk

I second this idea. Finshed building my 3rd full carbon foil a few months ago which is fast and easy to ride. But there is still so much to learn in order to get to the next level.

no problem at all.

So you want a Topic that is sticky, so it is always on top?

Just let me know the titles and I will create it accordingly.

Actually you or, better, everyone could choose what eventually becomes a sticky. They are topics that keep getting touched on and added to over time. In practice the stickys become many many pages of great relevant reading all in one place. Check out rcgroups.com Handlaunch section, it it awesome and highly functional. Where you have "announcements" it could just as easily say Stickys

I was actually hoping to further divide the Hydrofoil section into more specific categories, then we could go straight to our topic . Building would just be one of the topics. You/ we could add any others that come up, Naked foiling , Racing, Tricks and transitions, vacation spots, singles only, etc. The buiding section could have stickys too.

I am so geeked out on building, I just need a place to go , not France. Help

thanks Toby

the problem is, if you make too many small forums it will lack traffic.

But a sticky topic will have the problem of not being divided into different topics within the building discussions.

There is a board builders forum...I think it is a good place...because you will also read about other techniques or materials...which might inspire you for your building.

What do you think?

Kite Board Hydro Foil (KBHF) builders forum, easy.
And needed, as factory built cost far to much, most lower cost for sure lack performance, one could build better,
MUCH cheaper and a fun project, if just informed!

Come on Toby, please? I loved the "No problem at all " response.

KBHF builders forum.

I am a couple months into the newest all carbon 2 piece KOOK foil.

I really want to share on the new builders forum. The molds are almost ready, just a couple kinks left to work out . Very exciting stuff, at least for me.

Pretty please?

Heh,

I have a suggestion, just rename the "Board Builders" to "HF & Board Builders".

The problem with all of this is traction. There is no enough traction for 2 forums...

At the end of the day, the board is used by both, foiling and non-foiling kiting. No board, no foiling, right? ;)

@tahoedirk, nothing is stopping you to share your work tho. The reason why French forums are so visited is traction. I'll try giving one example, we have 1700 registered kiters in WA (more across AU), NONE of them making own boards. Or only one on the blue Moon.

I think this is due to the lifestyle and standard of living. Hence, no traction at all on AU building site. Zero.

I hesitate because there are not many replies on this topic who want it too. Renaming board builders forum doesn't change much...board is board.
I just need to be convinced that it is needed...so far I am not...
I think if it is all in one builder forum everyone can learn more from each other, no matter what type of board gets build...and due to higher Foil board prices there will be more talks about it anyway...
