I like this game - and 9lbs can't be more than the foil fish, can it? That thing is a weapon if you catch its edge...

Depends on what you call junk. A hunk of ply is junk, but the jimmy Lewis I had collecting dust that I used for my first foil board might not qualify.
I would allow that boogie board. Especially if it has already had a career with your kids. Is it EPS inside a nylon cover or the softer foam like a pool noodle? EPS would be best for glassing. Lots of cheap beach store toy boards would suffice as a decent blank.

Could you glass right over the nylon cover? And how tough would that be?

I built a shinn style removable foil plate with added strap inserts to mount my spitfire to my old shinnster. Cost about $150 aud in materials. Works pretty well. Once I recover from a motorcycle accident I was thinking of mounting a body board or skim board on it to play around with.

Plummet, Starsky. Agree.
Crowd makes the call on what's junk or not if you have it.
My call would be if you really are ready to take it to junk yard, yeah it's junk.
Bletti, you have to include hours to source, buy, build and the cost of the shinnster.. So I don't think you'll win.
The idea to take a bit of plywood and attach to bottom of boogie board sounds like efficient use of resources. Plywood and boogie could be free. Plus 1-2 hrs.

Things I realized from using a small board.
1) I thought I would have more severe crashes since I have less surface area. This is the opposite. Since the board is not long you don't catch the nose and go flying. You could probably go with 90 cm length
2) adding float is the biggest issue.

Everyone will have their preference. At first while learning the extra nose and rocker on my converted surfboard definitely kept it from ditching. Often I'd fall off anyway from the deceleration. Eventually you get past that and the nose is less helpful. My board is 110 cm (3' 7")and feels just about right. Enough board to comfortably accommodate my stance and leave about a foot of functional nose. at some point touch downs are more belly downs than nose ditches because you're already correcting but still bottom out. This board deals with it better than my first because there's less deceleration. It usually pops back up on the foil and is more functional for my current skill level. The practical limit to size for me has more to do with ease of low wind waterstarting. I use smaller kites, so need a board that will pop up efficiently with a quick loop. As a bonus, It's pretty easy to purposefully surface plow through small oncoming surf/wash while waiting for your shot to loop the kite and foil away. Surface moves and recovery are pretty easy as a skim will skim along quite nicely as long as you have your foil mounted in the right spot to maintain the foot position for riding it without the foil. I really wanted to make a go of the wakeskate, but found a skim more practical for every day use. Skims make a decent light wind board on their own, skates, need more wind.

Starsky,
How much rocker does your skim have? I have a Crazyfly skim that i am planning to try out, but it seems to have very little lift in the front, I wonder if that will be an isue?
Greetings,
Jaros

Jaros,
I have Nobile skim with very little nose rocker and I learned with it, no problem. The issue I have is that the board flexes a bit, which makes changing feet more difficult at least I think so. I have added a carbon strips due to that.
How flexy CF skimboard is and what year is yours?
