M6 Brass Nut for Chinook Track, where to get?

Postby droffats » Tue Apr 11, 2017 12:18 am

Seems most brands use the 8M x 1.25 pitch, but I need the M6 brass nut and I think it is 1.0 pitch. I don't want to name the brands in case that starts a flame war (oh shoot, that will start it for sure). Anyway, that brass t-nut thingy that lays in the Chinook track is what I'm looking for. So yeah, an M8 nut will fit in there too, but that bolt is too thick to go through the mast plate hole.

Anyone know where I can get one. Tried West Marine, TrueValue, etc.

Thanks,
Stafford

Any windsurfing store should have that part.

There is no such thing as an 8M bolt or nut.

It is M8 and stands for metric threading 8 mm.

Could also just be called 8 mm as this implies it is metric, but the short M8 is what is used so not in doubt.

Occasionally the term "ASTM A194 Grade 8M Nuts" or similar standards are used, for a stronger and high temperature nut.
"8" is not the size or type, as they come in both UNC and metric threading, and different sizes.

But 6M or 8M is not thread sizing.... "M" as a unit stands for "Mega" meaning one million, when put after a number.

Dont want to be a smartass here, sorry not the intention, but maybe a few did not know the labelling of the standards meaning for example M6 and M8, if used to unified threads (UNC/UNF/UNEF) or Whitworth (BSW/BSF/BSC) threading

And yes, as Chris wrote, you can get the M6 brass nuts in any windsurfing store.
Correction: NOT true, windsurf use M4 and M8 for US Fin boxes and mast tracks !!!

Thanks everyone. Peter, your explanations are always thorough and accurate. I knew in the back of my mind I was writing something wrong when I put 8M instead of M8, but I wasn't sure. Maybe you can answer the pitch then too? Is it 1 thread per centimeter or millimeter or something else entirely? Like 1.25 pitch or, 1.0 pitch.

Thanks,
Stafford

Metric thread description indicates thread pitch in mm. unlike standard thread description where thread pitch is indicated as how many threads fit inside one inch.

So, pole boarders use M8's too. The nearest shop said they used to use something close to an M6 but in English threading but the kept breaking (too small for the load?).

On the North track system -- the nearest North dealer said North doesn't sell the track parts separate.

Chinook sell M8. Even the like you put up Borist is for M8.

grrrrrr.....

Yes they do. As always, up to the dealer:

https://www.northkiteboarding.com/es/pr ... track-nut/

I have no clue why M8 is used. But than, I'm light, if someone weight a ton, good for them :) The brass M8 WS tnut is AU$5 each. And no, very very hard to find M6.
I think I've paid $10 for North set, duno, don't remember.

Sorry, I was wrong too when writing "you can get the M6 brass nuts in any windsurfing store" :(

Just checked up, and my US Fins are M4 plates, and the mast tracks M8 T nuts.
Also means, the Chinook do not have these either, as they are M8.

The M6 I remembered was the Poswerbox and Tuttlebox screws, but they have no T nut, just the round brass inserts so to no help...

Downunder you are right, it is only M4 and M8 that "floats around everywhere" in windsurf shops, and M6 T nuts are more difficult to find indeed.
And you say the Norht tracks use M6 and a smaller pitch?
Normal M6 pitch i 1 mm, and if smaller it must be "Fine" meaning 0,75 mm.

Not as easy then, but you can buy the North T nuts and get some fine pitch M6 stainless steel screws, BUT, can be difficult to find as many often make fine pitch down to M8 only - but they exist.
