Turns and more turns...

Postby borist » Tue Apr 25, 2017 5:10 pm

I've been thinking about which types of turn I want to master, so I made a list. Can you add more to this? Or perhaps other similar "trick"

Turns (transitions):
downwind heel to toe
downwind toe to heel
jibe (foot switch) heel to toe
jibe (foot switch) toe to heel
roll tack
regular tack
upwind 180 heel to toe
upwind 180 toe to heel
360 heelside
360 toeside

Great list Boris, and some really difficult ones (toeside 360 :o )

One is missing - the aerial jibe both strapped and strapless you can jump, change direction, and land after a footswitch (I can not / dont, but some do).

Okay, it is not a "turn" as such, agree.

A 360 on the waveface (both small or bigger) is a variant that, at least heelside which is the only way I can, is just awesome and in some respects easier than without the wave, as you can lean back more and dont risk getting ventilation - and it feels SO great :naughty:

The one I most want to progress to is an air turn. The strapless grabbed back roll.

Sounds yummy! I can almost feel it :D . I do vent on 360 heel way too often - leaning back too much and not fast enough on entry, I think. Then it turns into something resembling a pathetic backroll attempt

Now that's a list that everyone one would have envy to master. I'm at the stage of just trying to consistently complete jibes on a regular basis. I've become lazy doing toeside jibes most of the time. Practice,Practice, Practice!

upwind 180 heel to toe
upwind 180 toe to heel

360 toeside
You can multiply this list by two and learn all these manoeuvres on both sides :)

The regular tack is the one that fascinates me, and I have only seen it extremely rare, as really difficult to master flying.

Look here, one done at 1:45, also lots of great "Turns" in this vid that ticks many on the list and good inspiration:

The most recent Ketos video had some of the smoothest transitions I've seen, including aerial foot changes, but for some reason it's been taken down.

Here are some really nice toeside 360s (mainly towards the end) - such a stylish manoeuvre, especially the one at 3:03.

here is a question for ya': if you combine foot switch to toeside with immediate toe to heel <180 upwind, is that another tack? this is what I believe Greg is using in lieu of tack.
How about heel to toe <180 upwind followed immediately with a foot switch?

stevez, truly right, at 3:03 awesome smooth toeside 360s from Greg :thumb:

And I cant find the Stephane video with the jump tacks/jibes either, it was GREAT !
