Adjustable straps that work recommendation

Postby lovethepirk » Tue Apr 25, 2017 10:37 pm

I installed the chinook straps on my foil board and I think they are designed horribly wrong. You simply cannot lengthen them b/c the neoprene cover on the ends only stretches 2-3 mm at most. I'm not trying to get my ankle snapped in half on my first ride, or be able to only tuck my toe nails into the straps. Furthermore, an advanced foiler at my local uses cabrinha straps that were probably 2x as loose as mine. He laughed at my straps. Another guy told me the straps are really good.

All I know is these straps are not for me. Anyone know of real adjustable straps for a surfboard that do loosen like a twin tip? thanks.

I have these straps, there's a trick to getting them loose. Find a soup can or something round and solid, open all the velcro and stretch the bejeezus out of the strap by putting a foot on the board to hold it down and pulling upwards on the neoprene. Stick the soup can in there to hold it open as large as you can, then re-attach all the velcro in the loosest possible setting.

They will contract back to a bit tighter due to the neoprene, but if you set the velcro correctly it will sort of hold the strap open in an extended position. As soon as your foot snugs into it, it'll wiggle really loose and leave plenty of room. I fall out of my straps easily when falling or bailing out, but find that they provide a nice snug tight fit when I'm going really fast downwind where you don't want loose wiggly straps.

If you find all of that unconvincing, the Cabrinha ones are pretty loose.

These are my favorite. I've been using them for many years. Loose enough for 7mil boots.

For learning to hydrofoil I would recommend a single foot hook on the front.

Other than the cost I really like these:

The Moses ones are very flexible. We kite in cold water and wear 7mm boots...the older Moses ones are like the OP's description...neoprene stops them from expanding. The new style ones, the neoprene is a sleeve with velcro and the strap is fully adjustable velcro.

I rarely use straps...

But sometimes I do, and always thinking, why use so wide straps as some shows ?

I have some North medium wide, comfy yes, but only use them as these are the ones I got as "spares" for the rare occasional strapped session.

My choice otherwise for waveboards and hydrofoil (if I had a spare pair), would always be the classic DaKine strap - they are not too wide, they stand up so easy to get in/out, are durable, easy to adjust to narrow barefoot or winterboots.

The classic Dakine strap that Peter reommends above works well.
But really you don't need the velcro adjustment since most of us leave our straps quite loose. So I prefer the Dakine Vario. It has plenty of adjustment range by choosing screw holes.

True - but if you jump/rotate a lot they must not be too loose, and as some of them can be hard on your feet you might get chafed if no velcro and too hard (noone uses boots here except in the winter/spring).

They are lighter though, so also a good choice indeed, and some are pretty soft too :D

I'm using Slingshot foothooks now. They seemed super loose before I used them. Now I think they are fantastic after 3 sessions.
