Why does foiling seems to push alot from my right arm !?

Postby Pedro Marcos » Thu May 18, 2017 12:09 am

So ive my Hidrofoil for about 1 month now, ive been praticing quite alot, so i should have about 18 sessions in the most various conditions and im able to go upwind and downwind on the foil and also gibe in both directions (normal gibe). Since about session 3-4 when i was starting to be able to foil (even if without any control) that my right arm was in pain after each session, and the left arm completly ok. This still happens today and specially if there are "hard" conditions where i still dont feel so confortable, like strong winds with high chop that its hard to foil over.

Does anyone felt the same? Im quite curious why it happens, because it never happened before in 17 years of twintip.

Thanks

I bet you also write with the right hand!
So probably you lead with right arm and left arm is along for the ride most of the time.
Since you are new, your right arm is probably constantly correcting as you ride.
Like after my first foil ride, my legs were burnt, from constant adjusting to try to not crash. It was 30 minutes and felt like a big workout...
does that make sense?

I have ongoing problems with elbow tendonitis generally but it is worsened with foiling. With the sharper upwind angles, i tend to ride with only one hand on bar. If needing to work the kite in low wind you are working that one arm hard. That is also worsened if riding toeside a lot.

Or in strong gusts that one arm is getting yanked (and that injury isn't tendonitis....it is something on top in forearm....i pulled something there about 2 months ago, taking forever to heal).

Is that similar to you maybe?

It's hard to tell "why" without seeing you kite. When ever a repetitive phisical activity couses pain, it helps to work the muscle's from a different "direction".
With weights in a gym for example.
Of course if inflammation is to strong you need to take care of that first.
I'm not qualified to give you medical advice, I base my opinion on my personal experience as a professional acrobat...

hope it helps

My experience level is pretty same as yours. My forearms get little sore also after longer sessions. I think that is mostly because I am more tense. I hold too strongly from the bar. Also having thick mittens (Finland is cold) don't help. My forearms did not get sore with TT. But i did not need to adjust the kite position and power all the time like with HF.

Try to learn going toeside. So that you have more different foiling positions. Try to have only 1 hand on bar so that your other arm can relax every other tack. Keep your tacks short so that your muscles use more aerobic workout and less anaerobic workout. Choose little too big kite rather than too small so that you dont need to pump the kite much. Try to control your speed with board: moving more upwind or more downwind rather than with the bar only. Remember to strech your forearm muscles both ways after each session.

Hope these help
Regards
Juha

My guess is that i do correct and balance myself using the right arm on the bar, because when the conditions are easier and i dont have to concentrate so much on balance my arm its not so sore. Lets see if this goes away when foiling at speed becomes more intuitive.

Sometimes I get a bit of pain high up in the arm near the shoulder area, but I think the issue come from falling and extending my arm out to stop the fall. This puts a lot of pressure near the shoulder area, so after a session when I fall a lot trying new things I can feel the pain for a few hours after. Somehow I feel this pain on my right arm, never on the left side.

I've had small aches and pains with falling on shoulder, arm gets pounded, putting force on shoulder.
Also in hand/forearm from tilting board up to waterstart, until I learned how to do it using pull /push method.
Now I FU'd my back, I think from falling hard.

Not sure if it applies to your case, but I've had a phase when I was riding on the foil with the kite much higher than what I would normally do on other types of boards, and this made the muscles in the arms and shoulders work in a different way.
Other new pains on elbows and knees from putting the board on its edge for waterstart and bodydrag.

Do you crash a certain way each time? Maybe it's accident damage.
