Fish... damn fish..

Postby Tone » Sat May 27, 2017 6:31 pm

So yesterday and today I have managed to log about 3 hours on my Spotz Shark foil. Totally different to the Spots2.

Anyway.

Yesterday in totally clear water I hit stuff under the water hard enough to throw me off the board. Totalling about 6 times in the space of an hour. Only once did I see a fish behind me after but I am sure nothing else was the cause.

It's spring/summer here and the mullet and bass have moved in but I can only think that maybe because my new foil is very quiet, fish can't hear/sense it coming?

Anyone suffering from fish related crashes?

Tone

I think that I hit small fish in our lake often in a session, few times big enough to throw me of my board. Noticed that if I keep on the same line on each tack the hits get less... :-(

The bonus is that you can go for a kite and catch dinner at the same time!

Me, I only catch seaweed.

I hit fish all the time, once hit a shark that threw me off the board.

I often ride straight through the huge schools of bait fish as well and they don't move out of the way at all (no way to really avoid them). Slows you down quite a bit while trying to rip through 1000 little fish because they just sit there.

I guess it's a combination of not making much noise, plus approaching at a pretty decent speed that they either don't have time to react, or don't even see/hear you until you're right on top of them.

Do fish even have ears?

I had same in Hatteras sound last week. I think I was hitting rays though...there were schools around. Hard hits right off the board, no damage on mast or wings.

I've always wondered how smart dolphins are. I haven't hit one yet but I've come close. This is not the first time, just the first time I had my camera rolling. Check out this video at 1:05
