same hydrofoil for SUP?

Postby edt » Tue Jul 18, 2017 3:56 pm

I'm making a mount for my SUP so I can foil with it, maybe paddle maybe with kite. Should I buy a new foil for it, surf style I mean, or should I use my kite foil. I know that SUP foils are supposed to have shorter masts and a bigger foil so they don't outrun the wave.

I saw that video already which is why I'm posting this to ask for other opinions.

Ok. You probably don't want to hear this, as I did answer this in the video, but NO, you do not want to use a standard Kite Foil with a 90cm+ mast on a SUP. It just does not work. You might end up breaking your foil, or bending the mast if its aluminium. There are different forces at work compared with kitefoiling. Trust me, I have done it, broken a lot of masts and busted myself up a few times.

Buy a new foil. There are some on the Market that are good for both kite and SUP/SURF foil. Takuma being one of them. It is actually really fun to kite with SURF foils and I believe that this is the way kite wave foiling will go anyways.

It simply doesn't work .... You need don't have enough surface area on the blade to foil slowly

You need around 150 square inches if you good ... Or slightly bigger if you a heavier rider

Hey Gunnar, I am enjoying your videos. What is kiting with a Takuma like? And what board would you use?

Thanks gunnar! That's exactly what I was looking for. I hate spending money and if it's possible at all I would do it with that kiting hydrofoil (I have a lot of deep water spots I go so the length of the mast is not super important to me). But the only thing I hate more than spending money is breaking gear so I have to buy it a second time. I also want to do that dual use thing, using a surf foil while kiting. Your video is great and yeah you did answer the question in the video, but you know how it is, always have more questions. Thanks for the reply. One more question. I want to be able to use the long mast on my SUP while kiting. There's a spot where I want to paddle my SUP from a dead wind area into a kiting area and then kite the sup on the hydrofoil. Does that sound like I might break it if I use a long mast? I prefer those long masts while kiting, makes it easier to keep the foil in the water through chop.

Kiting with the Takuma is super fun. You basically don't really need the kite once you are up, you can keep the board going with little pumps. I waves it amazing. Video will be coming soon :-)

I use it with any of our board we have at the shop demo pool. Most of the time its a Zeeko Air Race or a Takuma BX 5'4.

+1 for Takuma it has amazing lift and stability and is fun for Surf/SUP and kite. It's not just the wing area it's also the wing profile /camber that makes a difference. see photos below Takuma vs MHL 150 both are fun but the Takuma has way more lift and slower takeoff speed you can just pump it up on foil. If you're learning foiling transitions the Takuma inspires a lot of confidence. I just wish the Takuma came in all carbon.

What do you do if you want a 90-100cm mast/strut on the Takuma? For kite foiling only.
Who's selling it in Europe?
